That is not the case. Over the side pieces, the top piece remains in place and the two opposite pieces are centered.

One simple fault in this product makes it a great product. Here are a couple of good news items. A few minutes were needed to put it together. There was no confusion about the instructions. If the seat back is lowered, it sits a little lower than the seat cushions when made into a bed.
