It's not a sponge inside; instead, it's a silicone rubber insert, which can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Although the insert is not replaceable, mine is in excellent condition. It's a cinch to clean my cast-iron skillets.
It may aid in the removal of rust flakes, but you must re-apply it. To prevent rust and save your cast iron, season your dutch oven with oil over high heat. Rust will not be an issue if you heat up your cast iron and oil it after each use.
Sandcast iron should never be sanded with sandpaper. smh smh smh smh sm It appears that you have a carbon build-up. If this doesn't work, you can use lye or an easy off spray to completely remove it and start the seasoning process over.

BEWARE OF THE BUYER - China is the country of origin for this product. I had assumed that all Lodge products were made in the United States, which is why I could justify the price, but I'm disappointed that I had already opened the package when I realized it.
It was disappointing. It's 314, not 316 stainless steel, as the Amazon page description claims. There is a significant distinction. It's also manufactured in China. Given how Lodge prides itself on marketing its products as American-made, this is a perplexing choice.
season the pan with salt and pepper When your brush doesn't get all of the stuck-on (whatever) off your cast iron pan and you don't want to re-season it, use this product. After thoroughly cleaning the pan, season it. Despite my best efforts, it helped remove most of the uneven (unwanted) buildups on the pan, but it didn't completely strip it down to the bare metal. I think it's because the pad's links don't appear to have any sharp edges. When the pan is still hot, the silicone insert makes it much easier to use the scrubber. I still believe that a good brush should be used as the primary cleaning tool most of the time, but if you need a little more power - Before attempting to completely strip the pan and start over with the seasoning, this is the next step to take.
To clean my cast iron, I used a nylon brush. It functioned satisfactorily. br>br>However, this chainmail scrubber is far superior. Simply soak your cast iron (I know, it's sacrilege), and scrub any remaining baked-on bits with the chainmail scrubber. The scrubber can then be placed in the dishwasher. Bam. Done. Easy. Awesome.
I'm obsessed with seasoning my cast iron and carbon steel pans, and the Lodge chainmail scrubber works wonders at removing the crusts without damaging the seasoning. The silicone center prevents you from grinding too hard and provides you with a solid grip. Plus, machine washability is a must!.
He didn't mention the chainmail sponges until I was watching a cooking channel on YouTube last night. This sponge is incredible. br>br> Note: Although it is not a sponge, it has the appearance of one. It is a hexagon-shaped silicone rectangle. such as holes in the material to allow water to pass through. br>br>It was comfortable to hold, light in weight, and well-made. It easily removed multiple layers of cooking gunk (no cleaning required other than a quick wipe with a paper towel). I was doing consistent swirls with water in the pan with very little effort (no sweat broken kind of effort). br>br>It did, however, leave my pan looking a little dry (as seen in the photos), which is to be expected. This is not a process you want to do all the time, according to what I learned; if you do it frequently, be careful not to remove the seasoning. To be fair, I just bought my cast iron, so it doesn't have a lifetime of use on it. br>br>Highly recommend this product; it has taken the stress out of cleaning my cast iron.
It's not ideal for small particles, but it gets the job done for me. I don't worry about getting all of the particles out of my cast iron; all it takes is a quick wipe down with a paper towel. But if you want to get the cleaning done right away, this is the way to go! I've also used scrappers, but you have to wait for the pan to cool down before using them. You can begin cleaning right away with this chain pad.
These things can save you a lot of time if you have food stuck to your cast iron pans, and they can also be used on pretty much any other non-stick pan. coated with a stick I haven't had any issues with rust or developing a odor from something trying to grow on it because of the materials, and the silicone core allows it to shape itself to the area you're cleaning. br>br>It's also worth noting that, due to their size and price point, these things make an excellent stocking stuffer, and believe it or not, if they despise scrubbing pans, this may be their favorite gift.
