I got these and a really nice Rubbermaid sealing storage conditioner because I was tired of having to buy new brown sugar every time while throwing away the brown sugar brick from the previous time. Here we are, five and a half months later. For my Thanksgiving candied yams, I needed some brown sugar. It was the first time since I bought these that I checked my brown sugar. And it's still dripping wet!! It appears to be a miracle. Now I'm going to give these out to everyone!.
I've had a lot of brown sugar packages that have hardened to the point of being unusable. I was going to put them in a zip lock bag, but there was still a large bag of hard, unusable brown sugar. I took one of the bears yesterday and soaked it for 20 minutes before drying it with a paper towel. I stuffed the bear into a rock-hard sugar bag. I checked the bag today and found it to be soft and usable throughout. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. The teddy bears can be used over and over again. Take a chance and try it out.
To soften hard brown sugar, use this method. A bear was soaked in water for the night. I had a very hard box of brown sugar, so I opened it to expose the sugar and placed it in a plastic bag with the previously soaked bear. bag that has been sealed Sugar softened and was ready to use in three days. For many years, I've used this method and keep a bear in a sealed container with brown sugar. I soak the bear every few months.
I was disappointed when I received these and discovered that both the package and the contents were moldy.
For my brown sugar, I used these. They're adorable, and I followed the directions by soaking them in water. The product worked ok, but not great. I switched back to a slice of bread. The bread does a fantastic job of keeping the sugar soft.
This will not make it as soft as if you had just purchased the sugar, but it will soften it enough to crumble and pack to measure. It's preferable to throwing good sugar out the window.
My brown sugar stays soft thanks to the adorable little bear. We also tried it in a cookie container. For a few more days, the cookies stayed softer. We are going to use it again.
