Questions & Answers

Is it a Chinese product?

Yes. It's a Chinese product. (at the very least) mine..

Is this a pair of grinders or just one?

It was 49 dollars when I bought my OXO grinders. Both were given a score of 95. I'm not sure if they're available for purchase separately. I've tried a lot of grinders, and these are by far the best.

How much pepper does it have in its chamber?

I don't have a precise measurement, but it holds a significant amount of pepper. I have several pepper mills, and the OXO holds the most pepper of any of them. David

You Will Love This With Large Peppercorns! I bought this pepper mill to take sailing with us, and before we left, I replaced the peppercorns that came with it with Penzeys India Special Extra Bold, which is my preferred peppercorn. I purchased this pepper grinder because it was an Oxo product, and I've always had great luck with Oxo products. However. For three weeks, I cursed this pepper grinder at least once a day. It wouldn't grind anything, and the sparse pepper that did come out was all over the place in size; it was a lot of effort for very little reward. No one was more surprised than I was by this epic fail, purely because it was an Oxo product with such positive customer feedback. br>br>When we returned to the United States, I replaced the India Special Extra Bold peppercorns with a four-pound bag of regular peppercorns, based on a hunch. I used a peppercorn blend that I had on hand, and it worked perfectly. It was the peppercorn's size that was causing the problem. The Penzeys India Special Extra Bold peppercorn is quite large and could not be ground. It did exactly what I expected from an Oxo product once I changed the peppercorns.

I really like this grinder

********* UPDATE 2/1/21 *********************************************************************************************************************** After all these years, I'm not sure why I stopped using a grinder. For the money, this is an excellent grinder. It feels good in my hands and grinds up quickly. There are a total of five different grind levels to choose from. It starts out fine and gradually increases to the coarsest grind, as shown in the image. Each grind has a slight difference in coarseness, which you can actually see. So far, I'm very pleased with this purchase. ********* EDIT 2/1/20 ************

********* EDIT 2/1/20 ******* The fine grind produced granules that were more medium in nature, so the warranty had to be used on one grinder. After a few months, OXO sent a replacement grinder, which did the same thing. br>I ended up splurging on a good Peugeot grinder made in France. This thing is incredible. There are six settings for a very fine grind.

Oxo Peppermill does a good job, but it doesn't quite live up to expectations
3/5

As a proud owner of several Oxo products, I can attest to the brand's dependability, excellent ergonomics, and excellent customer service. This product, like other Oxo pepper mills, is an example in some ways, but that doesn't mean they're without flaws. There are two issues with this product. One of them is useful. The aesthetic is one of them. br>br>Application: br>br>Application: br>application: application: Instead of steel, this Oxo pepper mill, and all Oxo pepper mills to my knowledge, use a ceramic burr. Ceramic grinders, in some cases, if not most, do not last as long as steel grinders and do not grind as finely when adjusted. This has been my experience with the Oxo grinders I've tested and owned. While I've seen ceramic grinders do a great job fine grinding peppercorns, Oxo isn't at the top of the list; if you want fine grind peppercorns, Oxo will fall short, albeit not by much. aesthetics: br>br>aesthetics: aesthetics: aesthetics: ae The main compartment of all of the transparent Oxo pepper mills I've tested, owned, and am aware of in their product line is made of plastic rather than glass. This is more of an aesthetic issue than a functional one. The peppercorn grind dust coats the barrel as the plastic cylinders holding peppercorns become cloudy. In glass, this isn't as common. Some people, particularly those who own solid wood or non-reinforced concrete, believe that This isn't an issue with clear pepper mills. A clouded acrylic/plastic container is a visual blight in aesthetic to others like me, who like to use a medley of peppercorns in mills and enjoy the appearance of clear glass displaying peppercorns. Even if it's a minor blight, it's still a problem. The shafted grinder's design is also an aesthetic flaw. In a see- This is a poor design for a pepper mill. Oxo products have always been pricey in comparison to the ergonomic comfort they provide. I'd like to see them return a little more quality in the materials they select. Examples can be seen in the images.

A versatile grinder that's perfect for the home kitchen
5/5

When I was in a cooking class, I first came across this grinder. I'm a new cook, and I'd say I give my kitchen equipment a moderate rating. These days, it gets a lot of use. I can say that the cooking school where I took my class is always full, indicating that they receive a lot of use from students of various skill levels. br>br>Before this mill, I was used to the traditional wooden pepper grinders with a cap that you turn to grind your pepper. The OXO grinder is simple to use and does not require a lot of strength to turn, making it ideal for cooks with weak grips. The mill itself has a rubberized grip that makes it easy to use even if your hands are greasy from other cooking tasks. It also makes cleaning a breeze. br>br>The base is stored down in the grinder. The base of the mill, where you twist it, is wider than the top, where the pepper is dispensed, so it'll stay put on the counter if you need to. Although mine haven't yet fallen onto our tile floor, a couple of them did during my cooking class and were unharmed each time. The grind coarseness selector is one of the features I appreciate about this grinder. There are five coarseness settings, ranging from fine (which I usually use) to coarse (which I've used in a few recipes). The labeling of these settings uses dots, ranging in size from small to large, which I find intuitive; however, I'm not sure how the labels are actually etched into the mill. If that's the case, it's a good thing because the labels won't wear off over time, and the coarseness selector is easy to move when you want it to be, but stiff enough that it won't move on its own or through accidental jostling. br>br>The grinder has a good-looking design. I haven't attempted to determine what size capacity it is. A plastic screw-in base is located at the bottom of the unit. You can get access to the pepper supply by wearing a cap. The unit comes fully loaded, and adding more is simple - Simply unscrew the base cap, fill it with peppercorns, and replace the cap. The cap is secure because it twists in about three turns. It's possible that people with weak fingers would have trouble untwisting that cap, but I can't guarantee it. I prefer this style to those that have a pop-art feel to them. cap made of rubber - I've had a few too many of those come out unexpectedly on me to be comfortable with them. br>br>Overall, using this pepper mill in and out of class has been a pleasure. I'm hoping to get a lot of use out of it in the future.
