If you're twisting, it'll only work on the outside skin. And the skin on the outside must be fairly tough: This means it can be used on a regular lime, for example. On a key lime, however, this is not the case.
If you use the small holes at the end of the tool, it appears to create several thin 'curls' (zest only), or a single thicker strip (with some 'pith' attached) if you use the channel in the middle. It wasn't sharp enough for either of these things in my experience. The thin curls never worked, and the channel required a tremendous amount of strength to curl because it was so thick! I used this tool with a Lisbon (non-native) speaker. Since those are the varieties we grow, we'll use Meyer lemons and Robertson (navel) oranges. Mine went to a good cause.
Although I am right-handed, I believe it would work well for you if you were left-handed. Both sides are in agreement.
This is a tool for slicing long strips of citrus fruit zest. With a small, sharp paring knife, the majority of the flower shapes are cut by hand.

Stop here and look elsewhere if you're looking for a channel knife to carve watermelon or any other fruit. The ergonomic, fat, and comfortable handle creates a huge angle between the channel knife's cutting part and the surface you're trying to carve, preventing you from digging into the surface. Consider how you would hold a pen or pencil parallel to the writing surface. This is how it feels to use it. If you try to move it upward (imagine perpendicular), the cutting angle will change and the cutting edge will no longer be on the surface. This was a complete disaster.
We went to a cooking class and were told that instead of using the micro grater (which we all do), we should use this tool because it is much less wasteful and you don't get the bitter white pith in your zest. So we bought this one, and I have to say I agree! I'm getting three times the zest for much less effort and time, which is fantastic.
To have in your kitchen is a fantastic tool: small and multi-purpose it is useful The tool's round circles on the tip easily peel off small citrus peels, whereas the larger (what is it called?) thingie? The OXO grip makes it easier to hold onto this tool, especially if you have arthritis. It's so simple and quick to use that I wouldn't have one in my kitchen without it. In fact, this purchase was made as a present for someone who admired the one I already own!.
I bought it because I needed a tool to zest a lot of citrus, and this seemed like the right one. After all, the name includes the word zest. It works, and it works well, but I quickly discovered that a microplane is far superior to a zester when it comes to zesting. After switching to the microplane, I essentially never used this thing again. br>br>However, if you want your zest to be long and stringy, or if you want to use the channel knife to make a single long spiral zest, this is the tool for you.
This is by far my favorite; some of my coworkers dislike it because it's a little more difficult to gauge the depth of cut when making lemon/lime twists, but it's consistent and will keep its edge for years if properly cared for.
I've been zesting citrus with my micro plane for years, and while it's a great tool, I prefer the versatility of this zester. It's easier to zest with it, and you can cut strips of peel for a garnish with ease. It is quick and easy. This is a fantastic addition to my kitchen tools.
This little zester has me completely enthralled! I enjoy making my own limoncello with fresh lemons from my yard, but I dreaded zesting all of the lemons required (up to 20 for the way I like to make it) because it would take me an eternity! AND, before I was finished, my hand would begin to hurt. I figured I'd have to do the zesting over several hours, but today was the first time I used the OXO Good Grips Lemon Zester. Are you kidding me? It was over in no time. In fact, for good measure, I went out and picked a few more lemons to add to the batch. I wish I had bought this product a long time ago!.
BUT. This is an exception to the rule. I've experimented with a variety of zesters. You know, the kind you use to grate your knuckles on. The kind that appears to work but eventually becomes too dull to produce a good peel. This one, on the other hand, is fantastic. With this one, I was able to do in 2 minutes what took me 15 minutes with other hand held graters. with a fraction of the effort, work, and cleanup The design team did a fantastic job. Well done to whoever sharpened this or ran the machine that sharpened it. If I don't get tired of it, that is. I'd make another purchase. I'd get it as a present for my baking buddies. Maybe I'm so enthusiastic because I've tried so many things that haven't worked. In any case, this utensil has my approval!.
