Don't be foolish! I'm sure this is a good idea. A slit in the leather lets in air, however this is the only problem. Perhaps they do this so different sized handles can be accommodated just like a skirt?
I suppose this could be the reason. However, if that slit opens while you are grasping a heavy hot cast iron pot, you are going to get burnt. I had a similar experience. There is another leather handle mitt on Amazon, but the shape looks odd, it's not self adjustable or self wrapping, and a reviewer noted that it had shrunk enough to become a permanent attachment to the hand. Thank you for making this one available to me.
