Questions & Answers

Is there a double boiler in this?

There is only one boiler in this system. "3 second start up with ThermoJet® heating system," they advertise. "This means that the system heats the water almost instantly, from turning it on to having espresso ready in a matter of seconds." It takes about the same amount of time to make steam. It functions as a dual/dual boiler.

Is there a hot water spout for making tea or an occasional Americano?

That's correct. A spout for hot water is located right next to where the shot is poured. It's worth noting that the water that emerges from it is near-freezing. boiling. (approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit) Perfect for making Americanos or getting some hot water to clean an espresso cup. It will, of course, work for tea, but keep in mind that you won't be able to control the temperature of the water. It comes out at the same temperature as the espresso it was pulled at, which is near-room temperature. boiling. If you're a tea connoisseur, you're probably aware that some teas, such as green tea, should be steeped at lower temperatures, such as 170° or 180°, to avoid burning. This water has a temperature of around 200°, which is suitable for herbal and black teas but may burn more delicate teas such as green and white teas. It functions quickly and primarily on demand (1-1). Warm up for 3 seconds). If you make tea on a regular basis, however, one of Breville's many tea kettles would be preferable. I keep a Breville IQ Kettle next to this espresso machine and alternate between the two. Breville makes some fantastic products, including this espresso machine and the IQ Kettle. The IQ Kettle will heat water to the temperature you specify and keep it there (between 130° and 220° F in 5-degree increments). Both appliances look great in front of a bar.

Selected User Reviews For Breville BES878BSS Barista Pro Espresso Machine, Brushed Stainless Steel

I've tried a lot of different espresso machines, and this is the best one I've ever used Over the last ten years, I've owned a few different espresso machines and tried and returned a few more
5/5

For a variety of reasons, this is by far my favorite machine. I'll make comparisons to the Barista Express throughout the review because that's the one I've been using for a while. br> The machine has a nice overall appearance. Breville is the only company I'm aware of that has a magnetic tamper holder underneath the top of the unit, which is a nice touch. I have the stainless steel version, and it looks sharp and well built. A location where the tamper can be kept and where it can be found at all times. In addition, instead of the thin, light plastic used by many other brands, the tamper is made of nice metal. br> I also like that the majority, if not all, of what comes into contact with hot liquids is metal rather than plastic (though the portafilter does contain some plastic, but I use a naked bottom portafilter as described below). I like how easy it is to grind, tamp, and pull the shot with the automatic machines, but the plastic group head bothers me. As much as possible, I try to keep hot foods and liquids away from the plastic. If plastic particles can leach from water bottles, heated plastics will almost certainly leach even more. br> In terms of performance, I'll discuss the grinder, shot pulling, hot water spout, and, most importantly, the steam wand:br> I've heard some complaints about Breville's grinders, but I'm not sure why. Granted, I believe the majority of the complaints come from people who are far more knowledgeable about coffee and its preparation than I am. Despite this, I find the grinder to be quite effective. It has fine adjustments on the left side of the machine, as well as larger scale adjustments on the grinder itself, which is located beneath the bean hopper. The larger adjustments aren't particularly simple, but they are doable if you follow the instructions. I've only made one adjustment to the grinder itself and rely on the fine adjustments for everything else. As a side note, I saw on another reviewer's instructional video that fine adjustments should be made while grinding to avoid anything becoming stuck. I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I go ahead and do it anyway. br> I'm blown away by how clean the grinding is. After dialing everything in and leaving it there, the dosage amount and grind size are consistent. Plus, switching from a single to a double dose is simple. br> Pulling shots is also fairly simple, but it does take some time to get everything just right. When it comes to getting it right, the size and dosing of the grinds, as well as the tamping force, all play a role, but the results are visible during the shot pull. I don't use the included portafilter because I've always liked the look of the naked bottom portafilters, so I found one that fits this machine on Amazon. The naked bottom ones look cool pulling the shot, but they make a bit more of a mess and are a little less forgiving than the standard portafilter. br> You can get good consistent shots with a good grind size and amount. When I used my Barista Express, I noticed that if I pulled two shots within a few minutes of each other, the second shot was usually more bitter and not as good tasting as the first. The Barista Pro also has a three-second heat up time vs. the thirty-second or so on the Barista Express, which isn't a big deal in and of itself, but I believe the newer heating unit is more advanced and allows for a better second pull. br> Because the hot water spout is angled, it can dispense directly into the cup after the shot is pulled, eliminating the need to move the cup. In comparison to the Barista Express, I prefer the angled spout. br> In terms of the steam wand, there doesn't appear to be much advertised or discussed about the benefits of the steam wand over the Barista Express, but it is far more powerful in my opinion. I had a lot of trouble getting the right texture of milk for latte art before, but with the Barista Pro, the steam wand appears to be much more powerful, steams the milk much faster, and can more easily achieve the right texture and consistency for good latte art (my latte art isn't very good, but I'll blame that on my skills rather than the steamer). To be fair, I'll admit that my skills have improved since I got the Barista Express, but I definitely notice a difference with this steam wand, which I believe alone makes it worth the extra money over the Barista Express. br> I've also used an automatic machine, and I'd say the automatic machines are easier to use, have a lower learning curve (though there is still one), and most allow you to make regular drip coffee. They usually don't have as good a shot pull or taste as a unit like this one, and I enjoy the "artsy" aspect of manually switching from grind to shot. To sum it up, I would strongly recommend this machine to anyone looking for excellent espresso drinks at home that are superior to those found in coffee shops. If you're willing to spend some time learning how to use the steam wand properly for lattes and cappuccinos, I believe this machine is superior to the Barista Touch and other machines in this price range. In comparison to getting a latte a few times a week at a coffee shop, the machine pays for itself in a matter of months.

This is fantastic! This year, I'm a huge fan of Santa! Now that I'm a single mom, I can feed my caffeine habit without starving my children
5/5

To be fair, I was willing to forego a meal in exchange for a delicious cappuccino. The darn kids, on the other hand, insist on being fed on a daily basis! It's a little out of my price range, but Santa came through for me.

When I first used the machine, it didn't work; After thirteen days, The new one is fantastic, and I'm very pleased with my purchase
4/5

In the mail, I received the Breville Barista Pro. It was simple to follow the directions. There aren't many steps to putting this together. Photos are also simple to work with. br>br>First and foremost, you must "flush" the system. I filled the filter with water and double-checked that everything was in its proper place. When I pressed the illuminated single cup to "flush" water through the system, it worked for about two seconds before stopping. The screen then flashed "flush" again, with nothing else on it. I gave it another shot. I turned it off and on again, getting the same result each time. I unplugged it, then plugged it back in, saying over and over: the problem is the same It would count down from ten to eight every time, then stop and return to "flush" mode. I drained the water, refilled it, and double-checked that it was at the proper level: the problem is the same It didn't seem to make a difference. Finally, I dialed Breville's customer service number and requested a callback. I got a call from a nice lady named "Alice" about 30 minutes later, and we troubleshot it together, but after trying all of her options, I got the same result; it wouldn't even let me go to the "menu" for a hard reset. She said the electronics must be malfunctioning. I agreed to her offer of sending me a replacement machine. I am looking forward to receiving it. br>br>It's a shame because it looked fantastic. Although it appeared to be a high-end product, it did not work, and I was forced to wait for a replacement. No big deal, though you wouldn't expect this from an $800 machine. br>br>To cut a long story short, mine didn't work, but Breville customer service was excellent, and they are sending me a replacement. I'm looking forward to seeing how the next one turns out. ***UPDATED 09/10**
br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br> The only issue is that receiving the replacement machine took longer than I anticipated. On the day I reported the problem, I received an email stating that I would receive a shipping confirmation email in 1 business day. Three working days are required. I didn't do it. The shipping confirmation/tracking number took seven business days to arrive. The item was then delivered by UPS after a long wait. So, the replacement machine took 13 calendar days to arrive; I would have preferred it sooner, but we're also in the middle of a pandemic, so patience and understanding are required. br>br>In terms of the replacement machine, it's incredible. I'm completely enamored with it. Every morning, I make fresh lattes, and it's wonderful. It's almost as if I'm ordering a $6 Starbucks latte from the comfort of my own home. That's pretty cool. The machine is nearly foolproof as well. It's incredibly simple to set up and use. All in all, a fantastic device! I would strongly suggest it.

This was an excellent purchase
5/5

Beginners will love it. Setting it up is a breeze. Cleaning up is a breeze. It does necessitate other purchases, but it's well worth it when you're no longer buying $5-$10 items. 6 cups of coffee from various establishments.

It's too complicated and requires a lot of upkeep
3/5

The machine is too complicated to use with the exchange screens, inconsistance brew not two cups come out the same I have had better results with a machine that costs ten times less I would never recommend this machine to anyone what is the point of writing a review if nothing is done about it? You should remove the machine from the marketplace.

This machine is fantastic! I really like this machine; I'm new to making coffee at home because I used to go to coffee shops every day, but after a couple of trips to Europe, I became interested in doing it myself and saving money! It was the best decision I could have made! Coffee is incredible, and in just a few weeks, I've saved hundreds of dollars! This machine takes a few minutes to figure out (or maybe it's just me), but it's fairly simple once you've done it a few times
5/5

I strongly advise you to buy this machine.
