You can cut it easily, but it looks better if they do it for you. It is heavy vinyl sheet, relatively easy to cut.
In my case, I used a needle 23 gauges and a heated gun to remove as much material as I could. It's still not perfect but it did a good job in removing all the old material

I've bought a desktop / dresser top cover from Amazon four times now. My children had damaged the finish of one of the desktops by using the computer mouse there, so I had to purchase clear plastic covers for all three desks because they had messed up the finish. This is a bit of a bummer, since the plastic cover cost almost as much as each desk (since I do enough wood working to know what quality is, and like to get a good bargain, so I bought solid wood desks for a discount). In spite of heavy use by 4 children under 7 years old for eight months, the plastic covers have definitely kept the desks looking nice and new for less than the price of solvents and the time it would take to refinish the nice wood furniture. It is advantageous to buy a desktop case if you are on the fence about them, and want to protect your machine. Fortunately, the clear plastic style covers (such as this "LIMNUO Custom Clear Table Cover Protector") work well as mouse pads, and have plenty of grip so that they don't slip off the desk easily. When you look closely you will see they are very cheap, but when you don't look at them very carefully, they are not that much. When my clients used my desktops, both routine use like computer mice, and some scribble scrabble pen incidents, they were cleaned up with soap and water, where as my children pushed so hard that those would have gouged the desktop and really messed it up. I like the way the plastic covers look better than the way the desks would look if I didn't cover them!
