A shot glass will fit in the space between the shelves, which is 2 3/4" wide. Unless you remove two shelves to get 8 1/4", the shelves are not adjustable. You can, however, remove one to get 5 1/2" and two to get 5 1/2".

It was my understanding that the hooks on the back of the shelf are not evenly spangled, so when you measure for the hooks be sure to reverse your layout so that you drill the holes in the opposite direction.
