It seems to last forever just sitting there, but if you cut into it, you could wash the inside and that should mostly take care of it, I'd think. To smell it, you must literally put your nose inside the barrel. I doubt the room would smell like wine in any way. I didn't have it in a small room, but it didn't have a strong odor; when you were an inch away from it, it smelled like woody faint wine.
Hello Heidi, I would not use this barrel for what you intend to use it for. I agree with the previous comment as well. May I suggest that you ASK for suggestions on what other options you have for your needs? I wish you the best of luck with your endeavor.

The barrel was in great shape and very sturdy! I sanded, stained, polyurethaned, and painted the bands on the barrel for about ten hours because I was using it as a table base. My shirt had a lot more wine stains than the one in the photo. With coarse sand paper and a palm sander, it can be easily removed.
This is the most affordable wine barrel I could find, shipping included. It appears to be identical to the one shown and is in excellent condition. It's marked in French and smells like cabernet sauvignon - What else is there to ask for? I'm going to use it to make a sink and vanity for a powder room.
The barrel is my favorite part. It turned out to be exactly what I had hoped for. It came unwrapped and unboxed, which surprised me. I returned home to find a barrel on my front porch! It did, however, only take two minutes. I was surprised to see our address written in black permanent marker on the side of the box three days after ordering- If it had been a gift, that would have been a pain, but it worked out fine and gave it a personal touch. Perhaps UPS was responsible for the markings. If you asked ahead of time, I'm sure the seller would try to avoid it. I was planning on adding marble to the top, but I really like how it looks now. If you're looking for something genuine, this is the place to go!.
It smells exactly like wine, and it's heavy. I'm going to sand it down and stain it with Tung oil, then make a top out of it to use as a kitchen table.
Great product that arrived in the time frame promised and is exactly as described. There aren't many markings on the barrel in terms of vintage or vineyard, but the year is visible. The scent emanating from within is enticing. I'm looking forward to seeing the staining inside. I'm excited to buy more supplies for future projects. The shipping is "expensive," but it's still a good deal for the quality of a used barrel when you consider the total cost. My only piece of advice is to keep in mind that you're buying a used barrel. Don't get your hopes up because some of the photos are brand new. br>br>I saw some reviews where the shipping address was written in Sharpie, but it was all peel and stick labels. There was no residue or resistance when it was taken off.
As a gift for my fiancé, I really liked this barrel. However, it didn't appear to have ever been used to store whiskey in the rustic but high-quality aesthetic I desired. The barrel appeared to be brand new. I'm going to stain it a darker color because it's so light, but I really like it!.
This seller was kind enough to send me two barrels to use as wedding decor for my daughter's wedding. A few days later, both barrels showed up on the same day. They're all the same and well-made.
