Steel. Magnetic rods, to be precise.
For this curtain rod, inch curtain rings will work.
It's not something I'd advise you to do. Magnetic hooks, one for each backpack, are something I would recommend. My son's backpack, which was quite heavy, comes to mind.
On both ends, the bracket is the same size- approximately 1 1/8" wide x 2 1/8" long They go with a curtain that has holes at the top and bottom for the rods. They adhere well to my metal door and do not move.

Because this white rod set was already assembled, it was a breeze to hang the curtain and install the rod set on the door. The magnets are powerful enough for the semi-autonomous vehicle. For the heavy use that door (the garage door) receives, I used a sheer curtain with it. (It's worth noting that my metal doors are made of steel and therefore work well with magnets. ) Magnets don't work as well on some metal doors. ) The white rods blend in with my white door, and the ball ends are small, making the rods unobtrusive, and the rod set nestles close to the door, giving the impression that it hugs it. It appears to be tasteful and functional to me. This was a great buy.
The magnetic hold is extremely powerful. It won't be a problem if the dogs destroy it. My previous ones left scratches on the door due to sliding down and falling off, but these are AMAZING!.
The rod came in a timely manner and is reasonably priced. It is simple and quick to set up. We bought this to use as a backdrop for a linen curtain over our (steel) front door window. My only complaint is that the plastic end pieces that hold the rod are not a true white, with a slight pink cast when compared to the brighter white of the rod and our front door.
It's extremely practical, durable, and attractive. They were paired with some magnetic Roman shades from Ikea. Unpacking, threading the shades onto the rods, and hanging them straight and level on my French doors took me less than 5 minutes. Magnets have a tremendous amount of pulling power. I wish all curtain rods were as easy to hang and adjust as this one.
If you don't want to drill holes in your steel doors or windows, these magnetic rods are ideal; I use them on my french doors and have had no issues. They stay put and don't scratch the surface of your doors.
I was concerned that the magnets would not be strong enough to hold the door in place, but so far I'm impressed.
Magnetic Rods are attractive, and they work well for my French doors, which have magnetic rods on both the top and bottom. It's simple to adjust the curtains, and it stays in place when the door is opened and closed, which can be difficult with grandchildren.
It's not particularly fashionable or stylish, but it gets the job done (in the desert, the back door gets full afternoon sun). It's great to have a blackout drape. ).
