You need to drill a particular size hole in the bracket depending on what you're attaching it the hole is to go through the wooden frame of the window or, if it will screw into the wall stud, the size of the drill would be the drill size for the screw. They are meant for attaching them to the sheetrock wall, so that is what the anchor size should be. Sheetrock was penetrated by mine. In order to install the wall anchor, a 3/16 inch drill bit was used. As it attaches to the wall, the back of the unit is fixed. It is possible to move the front one out by 1 1/8". As it was, I already had vertical blinds with a valance that extended about four inches from the wall. Having searched online, these were the only brackets with a longer bracket that I could find that accommodated a 1" round curtain rod I wanted to install sheers on. It was a simple matter to remove the shorter bracket since I didn't need it. It is only a minor inconvenience that the anchors provided by the company failed to hold in drywall and I had to use a screw type anchor, but that is all.
I am looking for curtains that are 5 inches wide so I can hang them over my vertical blinds, and After I removed the rod holder on the back, I used them as a single rod holder bracket and they are just awesome! There is only one other place I found this, at Ikea & Co. Although they are heavy, you must use butterfly screws to attach them to Sheetrock. The only downside is that they were extremely expensive.
