While I cannot speak for vinyl, I have used it on hardwood and it was a disaster. I would not try it again.

The quality of these is really impressive. For the first time, I used them under our cat litter boxes so that I could vacuum them easily. Due to a lack of knowledge, I just used them in small out of the way areas because I was not sure whether they would damage the hardwood floors. In the past few years, we've added more throw rugs around the house, as well as backing mats made of plastic. These work somewhat better, but not close to as well as the rug grippers do. With this knowledge, I am confident the floors will not be left with unpleasant residue AND I am aware that it works better than the foam/polypropylene'ish type plastic backed sheets that are probably not recommended for our use. I cannot always get them to stick to all rugs and they leave a sticky residue on my wooden.
You can use it for maybe an hour and if you have dogs, you cannot use it because it will not hold.
