In the past year, we have not changed the battery. If that is just a setting on our clock, then maybe that is why it does not chime.
Although I don't know how wide the base is, I do know the widest point. look forward to checking out your clock as soon as I'm back from our trip! It is in my great room with vaulted beamed ceilings and looks great!

The wood is well packed and there are no scratches or nicks on the wood. It is very easy to assemble in limited time. As cheap as it is, this clock is what it is.
