stated by another poster above, the black square tabs are intended to hide sharp edges on the bed frame, since ANY tear in the fabric will affect the "bedbug-resistant" ability of the mattress. "Proof" that this cover is correct. A good sharp edge could still easily snag the fabric even though it is stretchy and generally tear resistant.
It may work on a thin mattress if the mattress is not too thick I am 8 to 11 inches tall. It should be noted, however, that this cover does not come with The waterproof cover needs to be designated as one for mattresses, otherwise you'll need to go with the normal cover.
