Regular mats do not cover as much of the tub as the extra large ones do. Strong suction cups hold it securely to the tub, even with the surface of our tub being slightly textured. A previous mat I had became slick when wet, so I purchased this one. We have purchased other mats in the past, but this mat is very sturdy and durable and provides more safety in the tub than those other mats. In my opinion, it is definitely worth the cost.
