Although I am not sure what to tell you, the quilted side is the side you rest your body on, while the smooth side is made from material that holds to the sheet or bedding so it doesn't move while you sleep. The magnet pad doesn't seem to work for some reason, but it actually helps me quite a bit. As a result of using this pad, I no longer have pain in my arm and am able to sleep again comfortably. I've only observed one problem with the pad, which is that the magnets bunch up and stick together over time, so when I buy the next pad I will sew a seam between each magnet and that should fix it. I am not sure if the answer is positive or negative. Please accept my sincere thanks.
It is hard for me to say how long they last. I am sure they will last you a long time if you do some simple maintenance on them.
