What kind of odor do you mean? When my toothbrush holders arrived, I soaked them in bleach and Dawn dish soap, as I do with everything I get in the mail. I haven't detected any odors.
I'm not sure, but I prefer to wash by hand because it's so simple to put a drop or two in the base, fill with water, and shake. If desired, scrub with a brush, rinse, and dry in the dishwasher. They are appealing to me.
The first 34 inches of the male end are shrunk to fit into the female end. So, theoretically, cutting an inch off the female end would work. Best wishes to you.

These are well-made and sturdy, but because I have arthritis in my fingers, pulling them open and closing completely is difficult for me. It's nearly impossible, and I'm kicking myself for buying them.
They're made of a brittle, low-cost material. I was irritated when one of them arrived with a crack in it, but I still had three good ones. Until I dropped one by accident, and that one, too, developed a crack! Beginning with a single drop! These couldn't possibly be used for their intended purpose of travel because they'd be crushed in a suitcase or bathroom bag. I bought one for around $1 many years ago, and it's still going strong with no cracks! I'm not sure how these have such a high number of positive reviews. These are completely useless and absurdly overpriced!.
It's simple to use and maintain. Smaller cases do not fit larger electric tooth brushes.
Colors that are appealing. Exactly as stated. Sturdy. This holder was given to my sister (photos added). She mentioned mildew on her toothbrush to me last month. She examined the holder and discovered the source of the problem. Even though three of the four holders have been in use since May, hers is the only one that has mildewed. I've given it a 4-star rating. Because the other two haven't shown any signs of deterioration, they get five stars. There is one more holder that has yet to be used. Hopefully, there won't be any problems there, either. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Please accept my sincere gratitude.
When I received it, the first thing I noticed was the distinct smell, as did other reviewers. Fortunately, the odor dissipates after a wash - Because I washed it by hand, I'm not sure if it's dishwasher safe, but I do like the colors. It's ideal for my family because each member can have their own toothbrush case in their preferred color. The magenta/purple one has already been claimed by my child. The plastic is strong and long-lasting. I also like the holes in the toothbrush case that allow the toothbrush to dry; I haven't seen this feature on any other toothbrush case.
They have a strange odor to them, but they do the job. After two months, one has started to crack.
For me, these are effective. They're long enough, and I like the holes that allow the brush to dry. I haven't washed them yet because I haven't had them long enough, but they appear and feel clean enough.
