Ringer speaker phone failure that is unusually disturbing

My previous phone's speakerphone was not working properly, so I purchased this phone to replace it. Almost everyone I spoke with on my new phone's speakerphone said they couldn't hear me and that I sounded like I was a long way away. Furthermore, the ringer on this phone is unusually loud and alarming, similar to that of an alarm clock. Aside from that, the phone appears to be in good working order.
