Questions & Answers

What is the difference between a thrift drain cleaner and an insta-flo drain cleaner?

I believe they are identical; the Thrift is simply a "Generic" or off-brand name with the same ingredients. Before I bought it, I researched it thoroughly.

Is this a liquid or are these flakes that need to be dried?

These are dried flakes with a high potency. It reminds me of lye that has been dried. It does not, in my opinion, perform any better than a liquid.

Is there any danger to this bird?

I'm not sure what you mean by "bird safe," but if that's what you mean, you shouldn't store this near animals.

What is the active ingredient (or ingredients) in this product?

Although there is no list of ingredients, sodium hydroxide is present.

The best drain cleaner ever! After a long period of slowing down, I decided to purchase this product
5/5

For months, if not years, I've been taking a draining shower. I'd tried everything, from Drano and other drain cleaners to baking soda and vinegar, snaking the drain, and even hiring a plumber. My shower drain would not drain properly no matter what I tried. It would drain slightly faster at best, but you'd still be standing in a shallow pool of water at worst (and well past your ankles at best). br>br>A few weeks ago, I had had enough and decided to look up how to fix the drain on the internet. I read every help page and product review I could find, and Insta Flo kept popping up on message boards, so I decided to try it. I figured I had nothing to lose after years of slowly draining. I followed the instructions when it arrived, and I could hear the drain clearing within minutes. It's been a few days since I used Insta Flo to clear the pipes, and it feels like I'm getting a new shower. It doesn't just drain faster than it used to; it drains faster than I could have imagined. During my showers, there are no pools of water, and even when I use a strainer to catch hair, the water just flows down. I've already placed an order for a second bottle to be used for maintenance (as suggested by the instructions). br>br>By far the best and most effective drain cleaner I've ever used, and I've tried a lot of them. Anyone with a slow drain should definitely try it. Mine had almost come to a halt, but this cleared it up in a matter of minutes. It'll be the best money you've ever spent on a home improvement project.

It works, but the instructions have been changed
5/5

So, it turns out that this stuff actually works. However: 1. br>br> Because one bottle was insufficient, I used two. I mean, I could tell the first one was working because the tub drained faster the more I poured in and flushed. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br After the first bottle, I realized I needed to deviate from the recipe, which I did with the second. br>br>In a nutshell, the instructions say to run warm water to warm up the pipes, pour the material in, run hot water a little to push the material down to the clog, let it sit for a minute, and then flush completely. The problem is that because this stuff is so reactive, it starts to dissolve as soon as you hit it with even warm water, and since you're pouring it into the opening, you can see a bunch of it almost instantly dissolve right at the opening by the time you flush it down, so who knows how much of it actually gets to the affected area. So I went to the store and bought a jug, which I filled with cold water. I stuffed the material into the opening and ran cold water through it. I refilled the opening with cold water and flushed it. I blasted it with hot water and then let it sit after doing that three or four times. I repeated the process several times more until my second bottle was empty. The majority of it washed down with cold water rather than being dissolved almost instantly from the start. br>br>After the first bottle, the water seemed to drain three times as quickly as it had before. After the second, I'd say it was about 4x as fast, so the majority of the work was completed with just one bottle/order, but there appeared to be room for improvement. Those were my findings, and it's possible that I had a significant clog in there vs. Someone else might be able to get by with just '1 cup,' as the instructions suggest, but I'm skeptical. However, at $12 per can compared to $150, it's a no-brainer. I am pleased with the results of my $200 roto rooter job. br>br>Update for 2021: We had an old drum trap hidden behind the drain, as it turned out. This was discovered when we tore down the ceiling to work on our kitchen below, exposing the plumbing above. Needless to say, we redid all of the plumbing and removed the trap, but that is essentially why I had limited success with this product; the trap probably prevents it from being fully effective, not to mention the fact that you can't snake through it.

Finally, Something That Is Effective! My bathroom sink was draining extremely slowly, which was both annoying and concerning
5/5

I purchased roughly three. From the store, I bought four different drain cleaners (Plumr, Drano, and so on). I've experimented with both name-brand and generic products. Though they had previously worked for me in my previous apartment, they did not work this time. It was extremely inconvenient. br>After that, I tried the homemade version, which involved baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water. That, too, did not work. br>Finally, after more internet research, I discovered this brand, and boy am I glad and relieved that I did. It was incredibly easy to use, and it cleared everything up after just one application. Of course, just to be sure, I used it a second time. The sink is now perfect, and you can bet that if another sink gets clogged in my lifetime or if anyone tells me about a clogged sink problem they're having, I'll get/recommend this product!: Thank you so much! )br>.

This is the best, even better than Drano and Liquid Plumber
5/5

My local hardware store recommended it, and I usually buy it there, but I needed to ship some to my mother recently, so I went to Amazon. It appeals to me because it is much less damaging to pipes and the environment. It is, however, very irritating to the skin, so use gloves and avoid breathing the fumes. It's something I use on and off. to clean the shower drain and sinks of hair and gunk on a regular basis I haven't had any problems with it so far. The only drawback is that it isn't as simple as pouring something down the drain. Because the reactants are chunky flakes, you'll have to poke at them to get them down into a shower drain with a fixed stopper. But it was well worth the effort.

It's a cinch to use
5/5

I was skeptical because I'd tried a lot of different products for our master bedroom's bathroom sink. We've had this sink for over 20 years and it's always been a problem. We've had it cleaned by professionals, and I've tried every Drano-type product you can think of. All of the solutions are adequate, but none of them compare to Thrift's Insta Drain. I followed the instructions and was ecstatic with the results right away. My initial treatment has been almost two weeks, and the sink drains better than ever. This is a product that I wholeheartedly endorse.
