The roots are killed right away. The dead roots are then rotted by fungi and bacteria, and eventually wash away.
If you pour it down the toilet, be careful because it will foam up and cause a mess if you don't flush quickly. I know where my issue is, so I use the cleanout pipe, which I didn't use this year (2020) and had snaked out for $125.
"K-" says Roebic on his website. The number 77 isn't a root killer that foams up. It still kills contact roots, but it doesn't foam. From the house to the drain field, 77 can treat an entire septic system. Only the area between the house and the septic tank will be treated with Foaming Root Killer. If you're dealing with a sewer line, the K-line is the way to go. One bottle of Foaming Root Killer treats up to 50 feet of 4" pipe line, whereas 77 treats a longer length."
The catch is that you must use it every three months, especially during the winter or rainy months when roots are growing, on a toilet that is slow or backed up. When my line first became clogged, a plumber used this to clear it, and he charged $75 because he worked for a company. But I can get it for $16 at Home Depot. 95, and I'm fine with it and would recommend it to others. I forgot to use it for 6 months, and the roots reappeared, but after using it every three weeks, my lines are clear once more. So get it and use it on a regular basis or at least every three months to avoid a hefty plumbing bill.

Trust me. I must admit that I was very concerned that this product would not work the first time I tried it. For the past three years, I've had to call a plumber to my house every year to clean out the drain caused by roots from my neighbor's tree. It's not overly expensive, but it's inconvenient, and when your drain clogs and your kids can't flush, things quickly become ugly, and plumbers in this area aren't in a rush to come out and help for something so minor for so little. So the last time this happened, I thought to myself, "What the hell, I'll give it a shot," and went to my local hardware store to purchase a bottle. br>br>Again, I wasn't sure it would work, but the plumber wasn't scheduled to arrive for another day, so I had nothing to lose. So I gave it a shot. And let me tell you, I had a major clog this time, and I was only able to flush once. So I followed the directions, got the product in the bowl, and flushed it all down the drain with just one flush. It immediately began to fizz. br>br>Now, according to the directions, you should let it sit for four hours. I wasn't having it. It was supposed to take 6 hours, but I wasn't having it. I wanted these roots to die, his friends to die, and his entire family to die. So I set the timer for ten hours and lock the bathroom. The next morning, the first thing I did was flush that toilet, but nothing happened, and the bowl began to back up on me. I'd had it with you, and I'd had it with you. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! br>br>Wait, there's more! It was something I overheard. Something was moved by the gurgle sound. The bowl was nearly empty when it was finally emptied. I couldn't wait for the tank to fill up again. As I waited for the water to start, my fingers danced on the handle, and I flushed. and then it was over. I dashed to the tub and filled it to the brim with hot water, then returned to the toilet and flushed it once more. It had collapsed once more. I'm yelling for my wife and children to come in. The city had planted an accursed Locust tree in front of my house, so I was forced to move. This will be the third year in a row that I haven't had to have the guy out to rod tree roots out of my sewer line, which I do once a year around the end of June, and so far, everything has gone well. What I recommend is that you empty the two powders into a small, dry container and thoroughly mix the two dry powders by hand (do not add water!). Keep in mind that this stuff foams up a storm, so if you have an older, slower "swirly"-type machine, be prepared. Start your flush, wait until it's just about to exhaust, and then dump the powder in; flush toilets, start your flush, wait until it's just about to exhaust, then dump the powder in; Pull the handle and dump the powder all at once if you have a more modern fast-flush. At the end of the flush, there should be no residue in the bowl. I throw everything in right before bed and leave it in the line overnight; the next morning, just use your bathroom/kitchen as usual and the problem will be gone. br>br>[JUNE 2014 UPDATE]: I've been using it once a year for a year and haven't had any issues. As a final point of contention. My house is 120 years old, and I have no record of the sewer being camera'd, so I hired a service to come in and run a camera through to the village main line connection, which he completed about an hour ago and was completely clean, with no tree roots, collapsed tiles, or anything else. Period. I saw it. There wasn't a single flaw that the man could find. As a result, I believe this demonstrates that the system is effective. Since this is an old review, no one is likely to read it, but at least I posted it. )br>[JUNE 2015 UPDATE]: There are no issues, backups, or flooding at this time. It seems like every time you call a plumber these days, they try to upsell you on a $10,000 pipe replacement! Then they try to convince you that they won't know how bad it is until they dig up your line, even if they have a camera with them. Is this for real? Why would you replace your sewer line entirely unless it has collapsed due to tree roots? Even if the line is replaced, I believe the roots should be eliminated. To put it plainly, br>br>Now, if you don't want to cut down your trees or, even worse, secretly cut down your neighbors' trees because tree roots do go a lot further than you think, use this product instead. This is fantastic. I haven't had any issues since I began using this product. There will be no more ten-thousand-dollar bids for replacing my sewer line, and they will be offering a special that week only! I even went through the camera footage (after Game of Thrones, of course) and only found one spot. They cut the tiniest hole in it just to get my toilets flushing again until I signed the contract to replace my line, which I didn't, and this stuff saved me ten thousand dollars. br>br>So I won't be giving you a 5-year update like that other reviewer did, but for the love of God, why are you thinking about it if he had no problems for 5 years? Even if you don't have a problem, you should start using this stuff right now. However, there are a couple of tricks to this. br>br>1) Dump this in your lowest toilet at bedtimebr>2) Get a 5 gallon bucket of plain water ready to pour into the toiletbr>3) Dump the contents into a bowl (that you will only use for this stuff) and crush the big chunks with a screw driverbr>4) When it's time, dump the entire bowl in as quickly as possible. IMMEDIATELY, this stuff will begin to foam! br>5) Quickly flush the toiletbr>6) Pour in the 5 gallons of waterbr>7) Flush 1- To get your toilet water level back up, repeat the process two more times. It seems to be confused by the 5 gallons. br>8) Go to bed! Wait until you wake up before using the water. 9) Spend your $10,000 on a boat.
