I believe the handle is not made of plastic or metal, but actually from a composite material. Although I believe you can reduce the handle length of your saw if you have the right blade, I am not sure why anyone would want to do that. I found this to be a pretty sturdy bristle broom, but it is not heavy. It was incorrectly fastened with a 1/4" metal bolt when I got it.
