It came in a flimsy plastic package with a lot of crunch. The bay leaves had been broken up into small pieces. This is dangerous because the human stomach is not supposed to eat the stem because it may lodge in the stomach lining and become indigestible, necessitating medical intervention to remove it. Then I learn it's not possible to return it. The packaging is terrible.
Purchasing the small containers is much less expensive. I use bay leaf in a lot of soups and other dishes, so having the option to buy in bulk is fantastic. I like the packaging because it isn't too bulky, and I store them in an airtight container.
It is similar to a chip bag in that it is not sealable. I needed to keep these fresh, so I sealed them up. I suppose you shouldn't be too picky?.
All I got was a jumble of shattered bits. You'd never be able to locate the broken pieces to remove the leaves before serving your entree because they were in such bad shape. Unfortunately, it was a complete waste of money; I've only made a few bad Amazon purchases in my life, but this was one of them. Because I just bought them, I can't comment on their freshness or flavor.
These bay leaves have a wonderful aroma to them. The zip-top bag is ideal for storing and maintaining the integrity of the leaves. There are a lot more leaves than I expected, probably four times as many as a two-ounce bottle from the grocery store, and it's a great price.
Amazon was used to make the purchase. The first package was not whole leaf, so I requested a replacement, which was identical. br>Broken Bay Leaves, which I would never use in my food. br>I'm not a fan of Maui BAY LEAVES.
Many of the leaves had dried out or had become so old that they had broken in the bag. The leaves broke in my hands as I tried to remove them from the bag. Due to this issue, measuring ingredients for recipes is extremely difficult.
The price alone makes it the best, but the flavor is unrivaled by any bay leaf purchased from a supermarket. In the future, I will continue to use Maui Spice. Catnip will be my next purchase.
