Indian bay leaves are not to be confused with sweet laurel bay leaves from Europe
4/5

Please be aware that the leaves shown here are NOT from a sweet laurel tree As it turns out, they are Tej Pattas, which are also known as Indian bay leaves. Both leaves are quite different in taste, and one leaf should not be substituted in a recipe for another. Tasting more like cinnamon than laurel bay leaves commonly used in the West, Tej Patta has three spines instead of one, and imparts an entirely different flavor to food. This leaf is huge, and has three spines instead of one down the middle. I took this picture to show the difference between the small laurel bay leaf and the When calling for bay leaves in an Indian recipe, there is nothing better than these ones. I was surprised to find that these leaves were so good--the glass bottle contains a generous supply, and they have a long expiration date (about one and a half years). There is a pungent odor and a nice olive-green coloration to the leaves.

The largest jar of organic bay leaves you will ever see
4/5

Our meals include a variety of herbs and spices since my wife and I are dedicated food lovers and passionate home cooks. The use of bay leaves is not as frequent as other cooking ingredients such as onions, garlic, scallions, shallots, and glazing sauce. Despite the hot chilies' increasing popularity, we still consume a fair share of them in soups, stews, Bolognese sauce, and exotic dishes. We serve it with meat chilies and we think it is the best we've ever had One of my all-time favorite dishes, South African Bobotie, uses these ingredients a lot. It is stuffed to the brim with crisp, mostly whole Indian bay leaves in this Bytewise Organic Bay Leaf jar. Unlike the bay leaves typically found in Western stores and kitchens, these are bigger than what you'd find in Europe. In a sniff test comparison I conducted on these and on a freshly opened jar of California bay leaves, I detected very slight but indescribable differences in their Regardless of the differences in flavoring between these and Penzey's and McCormick, I am sure they will be just as good to use in cooking as those we usually have on hand. I am particularly impressed with their organic certification. It is difficult to justify giving five stars to a pantry staple, in my opinion. It is not unusual for me to give such items a middle-ranking This is a In fact, we gave them three stars, not to be disingenuous (three stars is a universal rating that means "it's okay"). Three stars simply represents their status as a commodity, and that they are neither better nor worse than their The organic factor usually makes them a winner, which is why I gave them an extra star. I wish you a happy cooking experience!.

The leaves are huge! Bay leaves of this size have never been used before! To me, it adds a lot of flavor to soups and stews Stews work best when they are subtle, so instead of using a full leaf like many recipes require, I am using only part of it
5/5

Organic whole bay leaf from India is the only ingredient in the bottle with seals such as the "USDA Organic", "Cultivated under Pesticide Free Zone," the "OneCert Organic" and "India Organic. " Their website claims that they select suppliers who meet the highest certification standards for organic farming and that they In my opinion, the nutrition label does not make sense & I don't see anything wrong here, but it seems inaccurate to me. A 57g or 2 oz jar is contained within the package. Traditionally, bay leaves are used in Asian cooking. A serving size of 2g is included in each container along with 100 servings. That seems to be a mistake, and I think the next part must be incorrect as well. The amount of this spice called for in a recipe, on the other hand, is rarely large. Hence, it must be removed before serving the food, as it is inedible and unfit for consumption It is dangerous to consume it. It appears that the label on the jar is wrong in this case. The average calorie content of a food product is not going to be 314, no matter what. The expiration date is in October 2021, but before that it will run out from July 2022. It won't be too long until I'm done with them. The bay leaves I'm passing on to him are for Indian food, so he loves it. By the time an expiration date passes, I have used up all the bay leaves Usually they're fine. In the past when I worried they might be losing their potency, I used double the amount called for then regretted it after the flavor was too distinct. They shouldn't expire sooner than their expiration date since they will remain effective long after that. Additionally, I put bay leaves around boxes of rice and pasta in my pantry to keep them bug-free. So much jam has been put in this bottle Having a bunch of bay leaf at the ready I can cook, to share, and to eat My pantry shelves are protected from weevils with this product!.

The quality is good, but the price is high
4/5

There are a few pantry items that are difficult to describe but they are vital in a wide variety of recipes. I would be totally at a loss at describing the flavor of bay leaves. Nonetheless, I would be happy to provide you with plenty of examples if you ask me where they can be used. There is almost no stew or stock that doesn't benefit from the addition of a few bay leaves, and they're a great addition to most pickles too. There are few broken leaves or fragments of those bay leaves in this lot. It appears they have been carefully hand-selected and packed, with almost every bay leaf being large and perfect. This perfection comes at a price these bay leaves cost around $5 an ounce, making them one of the most expensive herbs I've ever Why do they cost so much? The taste of these bay leaves doesn't seem to differ too much from the ones I buy in bulk at a local market for a quarter of the price, but there may well be some dishes where bay leaves also serve as a garnish, so you might be willing to pay more.

You won't find your usual bay leaf here
4/5

I'm stunned at how big these bay leaves look. It has never happened to me to see a bay leaf so large. Each jar is carefully packaged and presented in beautiful fashion. Because I hadn't anticipated this, I searched for some reviews and information on these bay leaves. There is no mention of TejPatta on the bottle for these bay leaves. When I was not aware that there were different bay leaves, I assumed they all had a similar flavor. However, if the bay leaf is from India, its flavor will be different from that of more commonly used bay leaves in the Mediterranean. The information would have been helpful to me before I ordered. There seems to be little doubt that centuries ago it should have been called something else entirely. If the taste of these is going to be drastically different from the bay leaf I am familiar with and use in soups and stews, I am nervous. There was a mistake on my part. Before I cook with these beautiful giant bay leaves, I need to do more research!.
