If you haven't tried Sumac before, it's an intriguing and flavorful middle eastern spice that's used to give foods a slightly tart, yet roasted flavor. It goes well with grilled meats or salads that have a touch of olive oil and lemon. This sumac has a pleasant flavor, but it comes with not only ground sumac but also small pieces of the hard outer bits. They're edible, but having small, very hard, woody pieces mixed in with your finely ground spice isn't ideal; you could probably sift it through a mesh strainer to get rid of them.
These were not available in my area, but they were available on Amazon! Because hyssop is used instead of thyme in za'atar, I decided to order from The Spice Way. I had never tried sumac before and had no idea what to expect, so I moistened my smallest finger and dipped it into the sumac, oh! It was like heaven on my tongue, in my mouth, and in my nose! My entire family, including my sons and daughters, enjoys good food and prepares it at home. Thank you also to Eitan Tzur for sending me an email with information about your wonderful spices.
It's critical to recognize that Sumac is by its very nature an inconsistency product. Because it's a dried/ground berry, there will be a lot of variation from different brands or even different batches from the same brand; you have to be a little flexible with this kind of product. That said, the flavor was good on the pouch i received and the Sumac was all ground very evenly; it's texture is a little more gritty than usual (which could be due to how fresh it is, I'm not sure) which only matters if you use A LOT on your rice; In the end, I'll keep trying different brands of Sumac, but if this is all I can find, I'll be fine with it and may purchase it again in the future.
I'd never tried Ground Sumac before, so I didn't have anything to compare it to other than other people's reviews of other products, which I read tasted like dust; the flavor of this product is strong and pleasant. The presentation is attractive. It shipped and arrived in a VERY short amount of time. br>br>My only complaint is that when used in a cucumber salad, some small 'woody' bits accumulated on one's back teeth in an unappealing manner. These could not be chewed. I used a wire mesh sieve to strain the sumac. Approximately three teaspoons of a bark-like substance The sieve sifted through similar material. br>br>Then, in the same cucumber salad, I used the sumac once more. The flavor is rich and satisfying, and there were no 'bits' stuck between my back teeth. br>br>The Spice Way is concerned about the quality of their product and promptly sent me a replacement order.
Freshness and flavor are two of my favorite qualities. From now on, this is where I'll get my Sumac.
What a colossal letdown! I had previously purchased a small glass bottle of sumac from another spice company and was delighted to find it here for a lower price. HOWEVER: The sumac I got from The Spice Way wasn't red like the one in the photo. It had turned a darker shade of brown. It also had one-of-a-kind features. I bought some ground sumac, but it only had a quarter of the flavor of the other ground sumac I bought. Finally, the coarseness of the grind causes it to get stuck in my teeth when I use it on salads (along with extra virgin olive oil). So I spend 15 minutes trying to get those big pieces out of my mouth with a toothpick or toothbrush. (It's very charming. ) I'm going to request a refund. That's how bad things have gotten.
I'm very pleased with it, and I wish I could give it a four-star rating. I'm not giving it a 5 because of the two points at the bottom. I enjoy the flavor, and it appears to be both fresh and potent. Unless I find one with all of the qualities of this one plus the two things I mention at the end, I will definitely buy it again. I like that it isn't irradiated, isn't GMO, and doesn't contain any additives. The only things that could make it better are if it were organic and more readily available.
It was originally purchased for a single recipe, but it is now being used for a variety of others. I looked for it in three major supermarkets, one of which has a large spice section, but couldn't find it. I needed it for a Lebanese kibbeh recipe I wanted to try, and the employee in charge of this section had never heard of it. I'm glad I didn't order this from The Spice Way on Amazon before I tried it. The flavor is incredible, with a bright lemony quality to it, but it's so much more. The spice in the resealable bag was fragrant and moist - There isn't a speck of sawdust in sight. I now use it to add a nice, fresh flavor to my grain recipes. Sumac is the only herb I use.
