The "sumac" I received is almost black in color, moist or gummy, and lacks flavor (barely discernible). If you put a lot of it (for spices) on your tongue, it tastes like old wood or the smell of an attic.
The foil seal on this product was slightly open when it arrived, and it showed signs of moisture exposure. There are no returns available, so it goes in the trash. This appears to be a common occurrence based on other reviews. br>br>.
Mark's was on the outer lid and the seal had small holes in it. When I opened the package, it didn't smell fresh, and the spice had something on it that looked like mold or had been tampered with by air. I'm not sure why, but I didn't feel at ease with it, and it's too late to return it now. I'll consider ordering food items in the future.
I'm unable to return because it smells rancid. What a waste of time and money.
My wife and I fell in love with Turkey's "choban salatasi" (Shepherd's salad) when we went there. Every little restaurant and cafe seemed to have their own spin on it, but they were all incredible. I tried several methods to replicate that wonderful flavor until a friend told me that I needed real Turkish Sumac and Pomegranate Molasses. So I went to Amazon and found it, and there you have it! I can now make choban that is nearly identical to the choban we ate in Turkey.
sumac that has been dried But none of them did (or had such small amounts that it didn't matter). So I went out and bought this powder, and it was exactly what it said it was. sumac that has been dried It has the texture of a 'rubbed' herb rather than a fine powder. The flavor is exactly what you'd expect it to be. lemony, earthy, and mild. br>I add it to the rest of my Zaatar and mix it well. Now I am content.
I'm going to experiment with different ways to use the spice because it's so fresh and flavorful.
I'm going to try some of this company's other spices, and I'm excited to try it with roasted chickpeas and fish.
