Selected User Reviews For Yupik Couscous, Medium Grain, 2.2 lb
I hadn't had couscous in years and had never considered making it until I came across a recipe for a Middle Eastern dish that called for it recently. I've purchased a number of Yupik products over the last few years, and I've never had a bad experience with them. So, despite the fact that Amazon has a wide variety of couscous brands, I decided to try this one, and I was not disappointed. As is customary with Yupik products, I have no complaints; this couscous was delicious. It's delicious and fresh. br>br>While making this couscous for dinner, I discovered the following: br>br>Typical couscous preparation instructions include bringing water to a boil, pouring in the grains, turning off the heat, and letting it sit for 5 minutes. Instead of using the standard 2:1 ratio, I used about 4 cups of water to 1 cup of dry grain. The water had not been completely absorbed after 5 minutes, and the pot appeared to contain only about two cups of cooked couscous. I decided to keep the lid on the pot and allow the grains to absorb the remaining water. I discovered that letting it sit for 15 minutes allowed all of the water in the pot to be absorbed, resulting in 4 cups of cooked couscous from 1 cup of dry couscous, rather than the 2 cups I would have gotten if I had only let it sit for 5 minutes. br>br>I first discovered this method while experimenting with quinoa preparation. Quinoa is typically cooked for 15 minutes on low heat, but I've discovered that if I add more water than recommended and cook it a little longer, I get a lot more cooked grain than I would otherwise.
My family bought couscous in bulk from the supermarket on a regular basis. This is what I found, and it's a lot less expensive and just as tasty. Of course, because it's plain, you'll have to season it yourself if you want a different flavor, but that's not difficult.
I've used it before, and it's very simple to pair cous cous with a variety of main courses. It can also be served chilled with salad ingredients after it has been cooked.
The beads are of a medium size. sized.
IT COOKES QUICKLY AND CONTINUES TO BE FIRM EVEN AFTER REHEATING.
This is a nice break from rice.
This product appears to have been a lovely, tasty product in the past, but it had gone rancid by the time I received it. br>There are also no instructions on how to prepare the food.
