OMG, this recipe yields a LOT of bread, but it's delicious and it worked
3/5

I've never baked before (as in, never). It does not count to take powder from a box and mix it with milk and eggs. I wanted to try something new, so I bought a starter for sourdough bread. I used to love my wife's sourdough bread back in the 1970s. On the counter, I recall a jar of starter mix bubbling. But I'm getting ahead of myself. br>br>So I pulled out the recipe, and my wife (who bakes frequently) said, "Read the instructions three times and tell me what they say from memory. " " I was correct on a few of them. Even so, I began. The instructions stated that we needed to "feed" the starter right away because it would "die" (in some way) before noon the next day. or at least that's how I read the directions. And, yes, there were a LOT of instructions, and they were f r i n g t i n g t i n g t i n g t i n g So, we started by locating a large mason jar to which we would add a large amount of water and flour, as instructed. It was just about to fall off. We put it in the fridge for the specified amount of time, then started over a few days later. ONE CUP OF STARTER WAS REQUIRED IN THE RECIPE. "That's crazy," my daughter exclaimed when I told her. A tablespoon of starter was required in the bread we just made. "It's a shame she didn't tell me about it before we started. " It took 5 pounds of flour to get the mixture to the consistency described in the recipe, so thank goodness we had bought a lot of flour ahead of time. The dough ball was about the same size as a soccer ball. We let it sit and rise overnight, but it didn't meet my wife's expectations, so she suggested we warm the bowl in some way. I wrapped it in an electric blanket to keep it warm. That worked perfectly, and the dough was ready to knead in just a few hours. We divided the dough into four large loaves and allowed them to rise before baking them. They were done on time and at the correct temperature, but I noticed that the bottom rack loaves did not brown as well as the top rack loaves. Make a mental note to switch the trays in the middle of the game. bake. Oh, and one more thing to remember: We have four loaves of delicious bread after cutting the recipe in half. At the sermon on the loaves and fishes, there was enough food to feed the faithful. Countless times. br>br>So, yes, the bread was tasty. The recipe should have specified how much bread it would make and been written in a size that we old people could read without using a magnifying glass. br>br>Would anyone like some starter? We're down to our last quart, and my daughter gave me some of hers. It appears to get out of hand by itself. We'll freeze the baked bread, but I heard from a pro that you can freeze the unbaked dough (at some point).

Excellent product with a great flavor and ease of use
5/5

Thank you very much! Thank you very much! Thank you very much! I was worried that I would have to nurse the starter back because my package had been delayed due to covid, so I received it in lovely packaging with instructions on how to make the "mother" and a recipe. No, it took off right away after the first shot. I'm new to baking bread, but even my first attempt turned out beautifully, and my family devoured it before it even had a chance to cool. The crust was perfect, and the inside was soft and lovely; no one wanted butter or olive oil to be added. Since then, I've been making bread every day. MY KIDS TURNED DOWN A LOAF OF OUR REGULAR BREAD FOR SANDWICHES THAT I BOUGHT! They wanted mine, and I was not even asked to write this review as a customer. It's a fantastic buy and a fantastic place to start. I would not hesitate to reorder if I ever misplaced my "mother. " My friends have already inquired as to what I ordered for my first course. I gave it to them so they could make their own bread instead of stealing mine!.

I made sourdough bread from scratch! Sourdough bread has always been a favorite of mine
5/5

As a result, I made the decision to do it myself. Because I am not the best baker, I attempted and failed to make my own starter. Saratoga Jacks enter the fray. I mean, what had I got to lose? I placed an order for the starter, received it, and promptly followed the instructions, except I didn't have the 'correct' flour. So, I made do with what I had, and it worked! br>My first batch of dough yielded two loaves of bread, two dozen bagels, and a batch of dog biscuits (due to an overflow situation during proofing; Ensure that you have a large enough bowl. ) So, where do we go from here? Just to name a few, there are rosemary crackers, pancakes, and pizza crust. br>Many thanks to the Saratoga Jacks!.

You'll be disappointed if you were hoping for a "ton" of starter
5/5

So, this teeny-tiny bag containing a quarter-size dollop of starter will arrive in a cute little tin with all of the feeding instructions, as well as a plastic case containing a few recipes. To get your starter going, you don't need a "ton" of starter. This life hack, on the other hand, will save you about two dollars. After three weeks of attempting to harvest your own starter, it's time to give up. This was rising, bubbling, and ready to go after the second feed. I've only been doing this for a day and a half, but I've already made my first batch of sourdough. I mean. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because of the value for money. You're paying for the pristine packaging, the company's time, and your time saved; the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because of the value for money. I believe there could have been a little more of a start. It took a lot of effort to get "most" of it out of the small bag.

This is an excellent place to begin
5/5

This is a fantastic start! I wish that the feeding instructions were more specific. This yielded a large amount of starter and was extremely active, taking off like a rocket ship. I had to discard some of the starter, which is normal so you don't get overwhelmed. I'm feeding based on the following weights: 1 ratio. So, weigh out 4 ounces starter, 4 ounces water, and 4 ounces flour, for example. I started with whole wheat flour but ran out, so I'm now using unbleached All Purpose flour. If you're using measuring cups, you'll need 1 cup. a half cup of flour It made a really nice loaf of bread with a lot of flavor and just the right amount of chewiness. This is a product that I strongly suggest.

It appears to work for me
4/5

When I first began using it, it appeared to work. The reason I say "seemed to" is that you can't tell how much of it was caused by the starter and how much would have happened anyway because you're feeding it and it takes time to get started. Because there is such a small amount of starter, I didn't give it a 5 star rating and even considered giving it a lower rating. Although the container says a Tbsp, I measured mine because there was so little in the pouch, and it came out to almost 1 Tbsp. 1 teaspoon, to be exact. I'm not sure if that small sum is even sufficient to get things started. I'm not sure if it's what it claims to be. But, in any case, this has been my experience.
