My sister would always give it to me as a gift. I now order it directly from the WSU creamery whenever I need more. I'm not sure why Amazon charges so much more than other retailers. It makes the most delicious macaroni and cheese, as far as I'm aware. Buy directly; I do a lot of my shopping on Amazon; however, order cheese ahead of time because they are sometimes out of stock. FWIW, I ordered this from WSU in July and paid $24 for shipping. It took two people to open the box, which contained styrofoam and a couple of gel packs. Delivery on the same day. I just ordered two cans this week (January 2022) for $10 shipping, no styro or gel packs, and 3-day delivery. Delivery on the same day.
"As long as the cheese is unopened and refrigerated, it will last indefinitely," according to the product's website. The flavor, sharpness, dryness, and crumbliness of an unopened can of cheese improves with age. If our Natural Cheddar, Smoky Cheddar, or Viking flavors have been aged for more than two years, they may develop a bitter aftertaste. Cougar Gold® does not develop a bitter taste as it ages. Cougar Gold® has been stored for more than 30 years by some of our customers. Depending on how the cheese is handled after it has been opened, it will last as long as other store-bought cheese.
Cougar Cheese can be transported for a short period of time but must be refrigerated once it arrives. In most cases, I ship the cheese with gel refrigerants.

It's all about the cheese, after all. Not Gold. There's plenty of delicious cheese that doesn't come from a can.
The cheese was wrapped in plastic and shipped in a sloppy-taped used make-up box. The first can of cheese was warm when I opened it. As with the second can, I put it in the fridge right away. It doesn't have the same flavor as it did the last time I ordered it. I'm undecided as to whether I'll order it again. If I do, it won't be through the same company that sent this order.
The fact that this item must be kept refrigerated is not clearly stated. It arrived, and it was extremely hot during transit, so I had to discard it.
UPDATE- Following the reading of my review, Amazon issued a refund. Thank you so much, Amazon! I bought the cheese for my 90-year-old mother as a Mother's Day present. The package was handed to her and she immediately opened it. She stated that the cheese can was extremely hot. Why wasn't the cheese refrigerated while it was being transported? We don't know how long the cheese was left out in the heat. Keep this cheese refrigerated, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Until Amazon fixes this, I don't recommend buying from them. I like cheese, but I'm not willing to kill family members with it that hasn't been refrigerated.
In terms of sharpness / aging, there's a nice "bite" to it. It arrived safely packaged, and I promptly refrigerated it, as instructed on the can itself. However, I have a few issues. First, the can was nearly impossible to open with my can opener, which separates the top from the body of the can rather than cutting into the metal of the top. I'm not sure if it was my can opener or the can, but when the opener chewed up the can instead of opening it properly, I got a gash in my left thumb from metal shards. As a result, use caution when selecting a can opener. The second and most serious issue I have is that after ordering, receiving, and opening the can, I discovered that I could order directly from WSU for less than half the price I paid on Amazon. This vendor is overcharging his customers. If you want to buy this cheese (it's really good), you can order it directly from WSU for around $25.
It's tasty on wheat crackers, but it's not worth the price. I'm not sure how they can charge this much for a cheese that's only worth $5. 00 block.
I'm a semi-professional writer and editor. snob about sneering at Washington State University, and I have my own reasons for being a snob about sneering. br>br>However, consider this: This is the world's best cheddar cheese; The universe, in fact. br>br>You may be asking yourself, "What?" It's cheddar cheese, for crying out loud! What difference does it make? " No, it's not gruyere or goat cheese or anything like that. But, my God. br>br> "Oh, hold my beer while I get some more of this WSU Cougar Gold," everyone would say if they knew this was what cheddar could taste like. "br>br>Do not serve it with crackers. On grilled cheese sandwiches, it's not a good idea. br>br>Eat it straight from the can and sit down while doing so, because you'll have a mouth orgasm and don't want to hurt yourself as you flop around in pure pleasure.
- Yes, it is costly. br>br> But: How much would you be willing to pay for a mouthful of cheddar? br>br>You're well aware of your desire for this. br>br>I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
There are a lot of things about this that I think I'm going to like, the most important of which is that you can put it in the refrigerator and it will keep for as long as it stays cold. It isn't a store-bought product. As the internet would have you believe, it must be kept in a refrigerator state on the can. I'd also recommend going to the WSC Creamery itself, where you can get two and a half cans for the price of one on this website.
