Since the analogue scanner days (over twenty years ago), I have not bought a new scanner. Using this scanner is a great experience for me. When you bought the old analog scanner, you had to buy a frequency book and plug in all the frequencies by hand. There was no easy way to do that. In spite of the complexity of trunking systems, using RadioReference allows for seamless communication. It is much easier to program these scanners using software such as com and freescan. The only advice I can give those who do not own a PC and try to program these scanners through the buttons on the front is best of luck! Designed for enthusiasts who can handle advanced scanners. This is the first scanner I've owned for many years, and this one is all I hoped it would To start with, I would suggest you sign up for the 'Premium' subscription to 'Radioreference' and the FreeScan subscription. Although Freescan makes programming the BCD996P2 easy, if you are a 'beginner' there is quite a steep learning curve, but tough it out! As a reward, you'll get what you deserve. Our aim is to be able to view and monitor digital channels, such as Raleigh Fire / PD / Wake County Sheriff, as well as NCSHP. With the OEM antenna, I am able to receive many of the conventional channels as well as DISH Network. (I might buy another indoor antenna just to see how much more I can receive. There is only one 'complaint' I have, and that is that it took almost a month to receive it. I highly recommend this scanner (ordered 12/19/2018 and received it on 01/11/2019)
