This product can be used to record podcasts from your desk like the Blue Snowball via USB, or you can use it to record interviews in the field as a stand-alone recorder or with the tripod. This was a great recorder for my simple songwriting needs as well as for my musical projects. I had used Tascam products in the past, but wanted a hand-held recorder for use with my music. Despite playing my garage band at maximum volume, it handled it well, and I also really like its "Overdub" feature (which allows you to put down an idea in a hurry and then layer it over original parts later). It was a good idea to turn on the external microphone power and adjust the input levels. The noise was eliminated by turning on external mic power, but the input level remained lower than desirable. I have no problems recording with the lav mic on my Android phone (in fact, it works quite well). My Amazon tech support was unable to resolve the issue and told me the unit was defective. Besides being bulky, it interferes with radio signals if you place it next to the router, phones, etc, and a manual will be required.
