A good idea, but I had to return four of them because they didn't function. I ordered eight of these in December and so far only four of them function. The batteries have been replaced, but the units cannot record or play back. To give to my mother who is in a nursing home, I put them in a stuffed animal. There is a possibility that she has Alzheimer's disease. In order to help her feel less alone, her family members have recorded messages for her. This is not exactly what I had hoped My 30 second recording is great and I love how the lights come on when playing it back. I used these to record the heartbeat of a baby as a gift for the grandparents for Mother's Day - I was satisfied with how they turned out I really liked the recording and how easy it was to follow the directions. Even after being placed in a stuffed animal, the sound is very clear and loud. A precautionary measure we took ended up being taping the slider to ensure that it stayed in the "playback" mode while inside the stuffed animal and that it didn't record a new message by accident. Despite the low price and good performance of this product, I would highly recommend it.
