I understand that the Bluetooth connection takes precedence over the optical or coax inputs, and that it connects to Bluetooth even after all of the devices have been disconnected. ?

Exactly! When you're using the optical digital output and your neighbor starts using a Bluetooth radio, you've got a problem. BOOM! Turning off your computer makes no difference!!

Is it possible to watch this on a portable television?

I don't think there's any reason why it shouldn't be done, Jane. It worked flawlessly when I used it to connect a 2019 HDTV to some old wireless speakers.

One quirk aside, it does what it should
4/5

When it arrived, I hooked it up to my analog amplifier and used Bluetooth to stream music from my iPhone and Mac. br>br>The connections on the front and back panels aren't in the most logical order, but that's a result of the small size; it just makes it awkward to place somewhere where you can see the connection station and use the front panel control (volume). br>br>However, there was no sound in my case, or rather, it was so faint that it was ineffective. br>br>After a few minutes of tinkering with it, I discovered that, unlike the non-programmable version, The volume control on the bluetooth version actually controls the volume between the bluetooth and the analog circuit. In the non-profit sector, Only the headphones are controlled by the volume control in the bluetooth version. br>br>Ladies and Gentlemen, this is incomprehensible. Straight-line modulation is something you'd never do. with the volume control through sound; It should pass the signal without deafening the sound, right? I can only assume that they did it this way due to a lack of panel space or cost considerations. So turn it up and have fun with it. For the price, it's a good buy.

When it comes to DACs, I am very particular about how they sound
4/5

This one has a lot of potential! I conducted a blind a/b test with a Meridian Explorer 2. For the money, I believe the Meridian provides excellent sound. While I believe the Explorer has a slightly flatter response and more texture in the mids and low bass, the Blue Tooth 5 is a great value for the money. DAC 0 is a fantastic value. Blue Tooth has progressed to the point where it will not produce negative artifacts when played through a mid-range stereo system. I used Sennheiser HD700 headphones and a Rolls Bellari HA540 headphone amp to listen to this comparison. Even the most expensive room speakers pale in comparison to this setup. br>The bottom line is that Bluetooth has arrived and is very close to wired performance, and the DAC in this device is excellent. Bluetooth used to sound terrible, but that is no longer the case. br>Another thing to consider. Although the onboard headphone amplifier has good clarity, it lacks dynamic range and bass. It's only good for low-impedance headphones, and even then, it's not as good as a good headphone amplifier. It's just fine. The unit as a whole is excellent.

Sound quality and performance are both poor
3/5

If this is only for spoken television, it might be okay. Save your money for something more worthwhile if it's for music. I've had it for a few days and am not impressed. I use the RCA connectors to connect it to a Samsung S10 and a decent classic stereo, and I am particular about sound quality. br>br>In terms of sound, it's smeared and muddy, with little definition or detail. While the highs and lows are both present, the overall sound is unappealing. The output level is typical for USB-powered products in that it is slightly lower at maximum volume than consumer line level, but it is identical to the output of my phone. I tried turning down the volume on the unit and turning up the volume on the stereo, which improved the detail but smeared the sound. When I connected my phone directly to the stereo, the imaging improved noticeably, indicating that the problem is most likely caused by this unit. br>br>Apart from that, the Blue- The worst of all the Blues is the tooth range. I have a tooth device that is about 20-years-old. When I get too close to or touch the unit, the range drops to 25. My other Bluetooth devices get between 35 and 40 percent of the time. Line of sight is 100 feet. When I touch the unit, the BT usually goes out. br>br>For the techno people, I did open it up to see what was inside. The DAC is a MS8413 from a strange company with decent specifications. The op amp is a decent JRC4556A, though these aren't great for 5V USB in general. I can't read the BT receiver because it's missing its markings. A switcher that isn't labeled and a 3 are also present. It is equipped with a 3V linear regulator.

It's a good start, but it could be a lot better
4/5

The information in this review has been updated. I did not have high hopes for this DAC when I purchased it. I was simply looking for a "quick and dirty" solution that would suffice for the time being. I primarily desired a device that would allow me to listen to music on my phone (non-iPhone). non-aptX / aptX aptX HD) via my pre-existing pre-existing pre-existing pre-existing pre- amp without having to use an audio cable It accomplishes this, but it could do so more effectively. br>br>A true line level signal is not provided by the RCA line out connection. In fact, I would have given this four stars if the RCA outputs were located above the volume control and provided a TRUE line level output. Even with the volume control on the unit turned all the way up, I still have to turn up my pre-amp. Quite a bit of adjustment to the volume knob on the amp. br>br>Connected to my CD player via coax, I wasn't expecting it to sound better than the built-in DAC (Denon DCM-1) on my CD player. 460). It does not, however. Even so, if it did, it would have been a pleasant surprise. Could the fact that the volume control is sucking tone be contributing to the problem? Even though I was using a cheapo coax cable, I believe it should've come close, but it didn't. br>br>Overall, it accomplishes what it sets out to do, at a reasonable cost. It would be a 4 star review if the RCA outputs were designed to be upstream of the volume control and provided with a true line level out at the RCA. br>br>5/3/19 UPDATE: When I contacted the seller, he offered to send me a better replacement. When I connected it to my preamp via the RCA connectors after receiving it, I did notice a difference in the volume level. I had to set the volume knob near or at 0db on the digital volume display on the previous version I bought. The newer version switches back and forth between - and -. 20db to - 15db. When listening to CDs through the preamp, the volume is usually around - 20db to - This newer version is much closer to a line level output through the RCA connectors, with a gain of 25db. br>br>It's also worth noting that I upgraded the cable from the Proster bluetooth receiver DAC to a slightly better cable, which improved the sound quality. I intend to replace that cable with a better cable in the not-too-distant future. br>br>However, I did suggest to the manufacturer that the RCA connectors be moved upstream from the volume control in a future update of the BT receiver DAC to provide a true line level and improve the sound coming out of the RCA connectors. br>br>Comparing this DAC to the CD player's onboard DAC is a little unfair because the cable from the CD player's S/PDIF out isn't very good, and the cables from the Proster DAC (better generic ones) to the preamp aren't nearly as good as the ones from the CD player to the preamp (solid silver core). I'll post an update once I've upgraded the Proster DAC's cables. However, playing CDs through the Proster DAC is currently inferior to playing CDs through the CD's DAC. br>br>I'm going from 3 to 4 stars because of Proster's dedication to improving their product. It's encouraging to see companies want to address customer concerns and improve their products, and the new version they sent me is a significant improvement.
