They turned out to be not too loud at all. Volume limits are important, but everything else that we've tried has volume limits that are far too low, to the point that even on a car ride with moderate road noise, the volume level is inaudible even to the kids. Those are corrected with two settings that allow sound to be limited in a much more reasonable way. The one of the two we received was already dead when we received it - A sound would not be played. Our message to the company resulted in them sending it quickly and without question. Since then, there have not been any issues. In the end, I won't deduct any points from the overall rating because the company has been so responsive and stands behind their product so well.
