It's fairly common for chargers to adapt to the device, or vice versa, but if a Kindle cannot use a higher rated charger, then it's a POS, as this adapter is worth about $3, tops, today. There are a couple of different types of generic types, but it is the most general one. Each and every cable adapter that comes with an Amazon Echo, FireTV, Kindle, or Fire Tablet is the EXACT, IDENTICAL cable. In that case, if you're going to spend $20 on one, you might as well spend the five extra. You could use the $20 off device to buy an Echo, Dot or Fire Stick and use that adapter to power your fragile Kindle, then use ANY other adapter (even the USB port on the back of your TV, for a FireTV Stick) to charge your $20 off device. I think it would be better for you to just wait for one of the 30 sales per year that Amazon has on its electronic devices, and just buy a new, better, updated Kindle for what would be an incredibly cheap price after the sale. It's not impossible that this may be THE most overpriced item on Amazon, although you'd need to look through all the Amazon Basics, in order to determine that.
