Questions & Answers

I assume that by sending data to the IP and Port 23, data will appear on the RS232 port? Is it also capable of remembering the fixed IP address?

I'd say that if you configure it properly, it will work just fine. Having said that, you need to be aware of your protocol in order to get the job done properly.

Using the serial port, I want to connect this to an nmea multiplexer for transmitting nmea messages. Using the network interface card, will I be able to see NMEA messages on the local network?

In order for this to work, we need to use our NETRS232 device. Install our VCOM software application on the computer you wish to view the serial data on so that you will be able to receive the serial data. This is Brian from The Support section of the site

Do you know of any device that uses ssh rather than telnet for security purposes?

We offer NETRS232485W device which has SSH support instead of the NETRS232 which only supports Telnet. Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and Windows Server 2003, 2008 R2, 2012, 2016, 2019 are all compatible with the NETRS232485W. StarTech. Matt, the Managing Partner. The Support section of the site

There is an old and a new HMI panel that only supports Ethernet IP. My old controller has RS232 and the new panel has Ethernet IP. This sounds like an interesting option, but does it make sense?

Thanks for asking, I appreciate it! A DB9 serial device over a network is made possible by this adapter. Due to the fact that it requires software installation, it will only function on computers that run It is our hope that this will help. It's a pain to see hidden devices within device manager and even worse, you must show hidden devices
3/5

With the software that we are using for this device, I have encountered three problems. The most egregious problems (and why we are There is no access to the virtual serial ports it creates. Hidden devices must be shown in system manager in order to be seen and, to make matters worse, some software does not recognize them because they are hidden and hidden by default. Another problem I had was that I hadn't been able to get DHCP to work properly. I set it to use DHCP, and it was assigned an IP address, but then either restarted or reverted to factory settings. Three points need to be addressed By default, the IP address is set at the factory to One of the most common router and gateway addresses in smaller businesses and homes is 1. You have to take your computer off the network in order to manually configure the IP address on it so you can install the device. It's not a big deal, but it is still annoying. I would prefer that it uses DHCP right out of the box.

Having a headless server wouldn't be useful at all
3/5

In this case, the included "driver" is not a true driver in the conventional sense of the word. During server boot-up, it is not in place, and it doesn't load until a logged in user starts it. Having a headless server wouldn't be useful at all. It is a very poor performing device. None of this matters as it does not do what it is supposed to do. Having worked with startech for more than one week, I'm quite happy with it. Com's tech support is awful! I found that my fax modem would never work with this product. I ended up purchasing a different device from a competitor and I am having much more success with that one! All startech should be avoided. You can find com products here!.

Please be aware From a Windows computer, connections can be made - There is only one system! My mistake was ascertaining that it was a "standard" serial console server that I could connect to a router and telnet to from unix (also known as reverse telnet) to be connected to the serial port
3/5

I should have read the manual before committing myself To use it, you must have special windows There is only software for accessing the data, which I find to be of little utility As I do not have a Windows system, I am returning the device.

This will work for many different However, not all of them
3/5

may be a bit difficult to set up compared to other units I have tried, but I was able to use it for what I needed in this situation. The unit may not consist of everything you need, as it does not fulfill everything that other units can. Compact and reliable, this device is designed for everyday use. This is also a good value for the money.
