Although I enjoy it for the most part, dealing with serial devices is the one thing I dread the most. The documentation is rarely comprehensive, and with so many options (baud rate, parity, flow control, stop bits, everybody has their own flavor of wiring, 9 vs 25 pin ports, etc) it can be a real pain in the neck. Suddenly, a cable gets damaged and it stops working It was probably wired in some way, but who knows for sure? There are times when a background in safe cracking may be useful. It worked well for a few months, then simply stopped working A serial I/O port and an Ethernet link are no longer available. Connecting it to a console port of a Cisco ASA gave me the ability to run it as a serial server. The serial server performed well as a function as long as it worked. I am displaying error codes on the failed SP, but Digi tech support will not clarify them, or provide any assistance at all (other than selling me a new SP). The lack of tech support combined with the marginal construction of the Digi SP make me not recommend it for purchase.
It has been quite some time since I purchased the Digi SP1 serial-to-ethernet converter. It has served me well over the years. I would like to draw your attention to this one thing This cannot be used on more than one device (with multiple machines), if there are multiple devices that need to be connected. I have not yet tested this mix of brands, but you might want to consider doing so if you have this situation.
