When I bought my unit years ago, I did the exact same thing. Since the locations of the memory slots in this unit are not easily accessible, I would recommend taking the unit apart if you are comfortable doing so.
If you upgrade to 8GB, it is possible

After completing the installation and reading the 50-page user guide, I am ready to use this product. This manual does not mention how to configure the hard disks, how to set up Apple Time Machine, or how to configure RAID- The number zero. Three hours of my time were spent - WE ARE AVAILABLE BY PHONE, ON CHAT, AND ON THE WEB. A CONTACT WITH THE COMPANY could not be established over any means during those three hours. It took me 40 minutes to get off hold, then I was told to leave a message and the message box was full, so the line abruptly For an hour, I was #1 in line for chat! Even if the product is great if you can't get support from the company, you shouldn't buy it. I was misled by the company and will never buy another QNAP product. The good news is that Amazon tried to provide tech support, but QNAP was unable to share information about setup.
So far, I haven't been able to make it There was nothing I could find to help me in their knowledgebase. I couldn't find a quick start guide or anything to guide me through the setup process. Their customer service provided me with instructions for how to install My reply has been sent and I am awaiting a response. It's particularly frustrating for me to find the unit so challenging to set up, considering I work in IT.
It was recommended that I start with Synology as some reviews online claimed Qnap would be much more complicated. My Synology was quite a few years old when I got it and I had trouble figuring out a few things. In my contact with Synology support the only thing they did was copy links from the There is a great deal of help available from Qnap tech support. An approach rooted in human kindness. In an easy to understand manner, they explain. In addition, I find that the Qnap operating system is a lot simpler to use than Synology. I am glad that I switched from Qnap.
In my case, I am using the QNAP TS-200 All of my personal files as well as movies, TV shows, music, family videos, photographs, and more can be stored on my 251D. As far as the NAS media is concerned, I am able to stream the media without a problem from Apple TV and Roku TV with Plex. In addition to recording live TV with the NAS, I also use an HDHomeRun to record it. Access to my files is possible with both the computers in my house as well as my iPad and my iPhone With the many QNAP iOS apps, you can connect your iPhone to QNAP. This is an excellent machine, and I'm very glad I purchased it.
Because I wanted a simpler Plex solution, something that was easier to use, I purchased this NAS. As I use Plex for all of my media, I had only that goal in mind. I used a PC that had a USB attached RAID box for data storage prior to this NAS. My first reaction, upon opening the box (it was well packaged by the way), was how sturdy and solid the device felt, not flimsy in any way, and as though it used quality materials in its After installing 8GB of RAM, my first upgrade was to install more Note As a pro tip, here are some helpful tips While the manual for this NAS states a maximum of 8 GB RAM, you can certainly go beyond that, as I am using, and the system is recognizing, 12 GB. 4K files have so far been a little bit difficult to work with, for example, if I pause a movie, then try to restart it later in another room of my home, it will not load and I will need to restart it. It's not a bandwidth issue as I consolidated my network ports and my home has Cat5e hard wiring so it's just the hard drives inside that are the problem. Files with a resolution of 1080p or lower do not have this problem. It might be thought that Plex can handle hardware transcoding without a Plex Pass, but that is not the case. Prior to entering, I was not aware of this. Overall, I'm very happy with this device. It's perfectly suited to my use case, and I haven't encountered any difficulties navigating it's web.
It appears the hardware is well-designed and if you are already a QNAP administrator then it could be a nice unit, but if you have always used other NAS devices then you will probably have to put in some work for it to be If you don't have the right device, tech support will tell you to go to YouTube, but each video is specific to one type of device and cannot be used if you have a different type. Users are presented with a User Setup interface that is packed with applications, but you must first install each one to see if it meets your needs. As far as I can tell, the setup and documentation are nonexistent I am returning it since it is not functional Amazon is one of the best places to purchase! You can return a broken device if it's useless!.
It took a little while for me to figure out how to get my Plex server to run on Ubuntu, but YouTube is your friend and it finally clicked as to how this thing works. As soon as it's installed, it works great without any problems.
It took less than 4 hours to get everything set up and running. In addition to the helpful user guide, there are a great collection of videos on YouTube that are very helpful.
