Taking a look at ASUSTOR, HDMI output intermittently, and This is 4538D
3/5

In a nutshell In addition to storing video and audio files, my NAS serves as a storage device for audio files. As I needed more storage space than my ASUSTOR NAS offered, I thought I would give the QNAP a try. From the start, there have been intermittent problems with HDMI audio output. At times, I have sound, but at other times it is garbled and broken, and at other times (like now! it fails in its entirety. There is also a persistent flicker on the video. Currently have an open Service Ticket with QNAP, but this is starting to annoy me. My process of configuring and setting this device up took a lot longer than the 30 days provided by Amazon's DOA policy.
Be mindful of that when you purchase this device. It wasn't DOA, but it didn't work right, and I would not use it for my purposes if it weren't for those issues. The following is what QNAP technicians sent me in the 2nd update "Some users did experience the same issue, according to my research. ". A similar issue does not exist with firmware version 4. The Hybrid Desk Station 4 and build 20200529 combine to provide the best possible experience. Is it possible that you could downgrade the firmware and hybrid desk station app and then test the HDMI audio output for stability? Before turning off an old model of an iPod, you should make sure you backup all of your data. Downgrading the firmware can be achieved by following these steps. It is not a viable solution for me to downgrade Firmware. As far as I can tell, I'm stuck with this I have attached a video of the flickering I am experiencing. ****** 1st UPDATE **
With some back and forth emails and one question asked of me, it took a while, but I finally was convinced to send it in for repair after a few cryptic e-mails. Not very smart for what I require, but it's valid. Here's how I respond We reserve the right to carry out warranty work if other failures occur or if the current device displays any further degradation. Need a repair? I would find that to be an extremely foolish roll of the dice. I have been a technician and engineer for over 40 years, so I have little faith in the "Repair" of items such as these. My guess is that your experiences are the same as mine. There will always be intermittent problems with the repaired item because they will haunt me and not go away until I am done using The additional time I will be without access to the data is not to be overlooked. My motherboard is in good shape, and I'm willing to swap it out on my own, but to send it away. . . . . . As much as I understand your point of view, my immediate focus is on protecting my own data and my productivity. In summary, the problems are with the HDMI audio and display functions, rather than with the data storage and retrieval so far. I have informed all parties involved regarding this item, and I am concerned that the solution posed is a potential risk to my data. We reserve the right to carry out warranty work if other failures occur or if the current device displays any further degradation. *Note* I think I'd rather just call the QNAP experience a wash and stick with the ASUSTOR cloud backup. It appears that I can no longer access the QNAP Service ticket after the 3rd Update. Nothing was resolved, so they closed the case. Upon receiving a questionnaire from Customer Service, I immediately responded. The HS Science Club can use it if I donate it. Basically, I told them I got a lemon and that I am donating it to them. ASUSTOR is the next step. Thanks for your interest, but I think I'll cancel my QNAP subscription.

The product is good, the deals are great, and the game is The Synology Diskstation has been compared to a lot
4/5

During my ten years with Synology, I used several of their products. The service was almost as good as it was, but I only used it as a reverse proxy and as a storage. I took a look at the cheaper licenses Qnap has for security cameras. I was surprised at how well it turned out. The UI is said to be bad in many reviews. It seems to have an ok user interface Very fun to set up with many choices, though I had to do a lot of research to take decisions on how to set things up. Those are the two main uses for it. I also use it for It was easy to upgrade the memory. It was no problem to add one 16GB chip (Timetec Hynix IC) for a total of 20GB. I did not install the PCIe SSD cache because I do not plan to run virtual machines. I found that there are very cheap PCIe cards that can work with NVMe M. There are two memory slots. This might be something I do This is a much better deal from a hardware perspective than Synology, since there is no original expansion card to be purchased. The security is a bit of a concern because it is more open to 3rd party software, which may result in greater risks. The only sensitive data I would put on NAS is backups. You should only do things on-line if you're concerned about security. Update A couple of months after I bought the cheap PCIe card for NVMe M, I realized one thing I didn't like. There is no way I can use the SSD for memory since I only have 2 memory slots. It is impossible for me to participate in Moreover, it is not suitable as a write cache, as it might fail before the data is written to my hard drive. Because the SSD is built into the Synology NAS, it is 2 SSD. In that case, QNAP is not cheaper unless I also need a RAID PCIe card. Well, I guess I can order cheap security cameras anyway. This is why one star was taken off.

QNAP systems in question are not secure
3/5

After I bought this product, I learned that there is malware that can steal your documents as well as your username and password. You may be vulnerable to ransomware for the whole network on your home computer. No info has been released as to how the malware could infiltrate or what measures have been taken to fix this issue, just that you should "update Having a NAS system in my home is satisfying, but due to the security of this system, I cannot recommend it for the present time. Anyone should place this at the top of their priority list. The only security concerns I have are those that will be addressed soon. Yet, all else seems to work quite well. Getting a NAS for the first time is a wise decision, and I would advise only getting one if you have a powerful understanding of network protocol. It is possible to leave yourself extremely vulnerable if you don't know what you are In a perfect world, I would give this four stars based on the price alone. If you are willing to spend some more time setting up a NAS, you can accomplish this goal for less money.

My recommendation is to go with Synology if you use Plex
3/5

The NAS is disappointing for me. I had high expectations, but I'm sorry I bought it. My setup was simple enough, but setting up the software I wanted is a bit of a pain. I was prepared for that, but then I realized that all of the software they proudly promote has licensing fees, including the software license you need to access exFAT external hard drives. I would have gone with Synology if I had the chance to do it all over again. I've decided to build my own home server, or at the very least go out and buy one so I know it's powerful enough to handle my needs. Also, if you intend to use this NAS as a Plex server you should know that the file system for the NAS is hidden and so migrating my Plex server was complicated because I had to search forums to figure out how to access the directory needed for the Plex.
