So long as a figure is as old as or newer than the game then it will work on all systems. In comparison, the very first Spyro figure works in every game, whereas a new trap team figure ONLY works in trap team, and will continue to do so when the next one is released a few years hence. This is applicable to this year's game, but not to last year's. The old figures were even upgraded with jump attack abilities so that the players all had access to it. The toy makers are banking on toy sales, so they want you to be able to use them throughout the game. All of my son's games are played on the same figures on all of his devices tablet, 3DS, and console.

In addition, my son enjoys playing it as much as the previous Skylander games, and it would have gotten 5 stars if they hadn't found a different way to make you pay extra for additional figures, and now traps among other things. It used to be that any figure of a certain element could open the special gates in previous games. Gates can be opened only by a Trapmaster of a particular element in this game. As it is, the starter set only includes one of this type of figure instead of two. Even if SwapForce had only two of the special figures throughout the starter set, they still included a few in the starter set. A gate could be opened by any element of the right kind. it's a hit with my son and my son has already passed most of his allowance on additional figures, even though he loves it (and it's fun enough for adults). I like that they are considerably cheaper than Disney Infinity dolls.
It has become a favorite among my girls. The game is fun for kids of all ages. There are some jokes that are a little low brow, but kids enjoy them. It is definitely a price gate to get to many of the content due to the need for certain "traps" or Skylanders, but the game provides a great experience for kids to play. Even young gamers will find it easy to play.
Christmas was a perfect time to give this to our 6-year-old. It's a big hit for him! For children who love video games, this would be a great gift. This is content that is appropriate for children of all ages, and give birthday gifts are easy, since we can buy new traps or figures. This was his first Skylanders set, and he absolutely loves it! He just discovered skylanders a couple weeks ago, and he's already getting addicted to them! Playing with all the Skylanders sets is fun, no matter which set you have, it doesn't matter that it's not the latest. There will be more to come in the future for sure!.
There is nothing wrong with Trap Team in essence, but it does not have the same value as most of the other games in the series. The weakest entry in the series, unless you count Imaginators or the Invaders.
