I swapped out an old IDE controller for a SATA one on an older tower. Being able to go to Blu-ray is a plus for me. If I wanted to, I could use it with Blu-ray drives, but for now, I'm just using it with regular ASUS DVD-ROM drives. RW drives are supported, and they work flawlessly. I also appreciate the fact that it included all of the necessary SATA cables. I had to modify the power supply that came with the case 4- To power the drives and this controller, you'll need pin molex power cables, but Amazon has some nice inexpensive multi-pin molex power cables. There are also packs of those available. Because all of the drives, including the source drive, are the same model, I'm not sure how well this controller would work with mixed drives; however, because those drives are so cheap these days, it's probably best to buy a couple of identical spares and keep them on hand in case one spins itself to death, as they always do.
I have a 1 to 3 DVD burner that I'd like to keep in the future because I intend to upgrade to Blu-ray. At one point or another, ray will appear. I grabbed this because I already had a couple of pulled SATA DVD drives. All four drives were recognized, including the PATA DVD-ROM drive. I added a converter card to the ROM. I would strongly suggest it.
