Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Tripod Series 2 4 Section (Black)

Rock solid and light, but with some problems. Like anything made in Italy, it has its issues. I was removing a ball head and the "ground level" lock stuck without the top part of the central column. I am reducing 1 star because of this. After reassembling the tripod for the second time, I ended up scratching the aluminum with the bolt used to secure the upper plate. There are no changes that will influence functionality, but I was expecting more from a product at this price point. My favorite aspects of the item and the reason I didn't return it are The tripod will weigh two pounds if it is matched with a proper ball head. One kilogram is an extremely light weight for a tripod that can hold up to 18 kilograms. With the tripod you can easily tell why you are paying so much for it, as it feels sturdy and much more solid than an aluminum tripod you might be tempted to buy at an entry level. Overall, I am impressed with the quality of the tripod. It is well made and worth the price. It's just that I need to test it properly and write up a review as soon as it's done. However, it is not recommended that the tripod be used in environments colder than -32 degrees Celsius. isn't the most common use case, but since I was planning on using this in Alaska during the winter, that poses an additional challenge. I have one more complaint, even though this is an expensive tripod, it does not come with spikes, just rubber feet. The spikes will need to be purchased separately if you intend to use it outside. Spikes branded with the Gitzo brand cost approximately $40 more.

I have updated. The month of October 2017 has passed. It is extremely difficult for me to imagine my life without The Oben head I first owned has been replaced with a Benro head. In comparison with the ball head, I like the fact that the Gitzo has a wider plate. It would be great if there was more stability. The desert is calling and I am looking forward to testing this out. After resisting buying a tripod for years, I finally purchased a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod. After waiting so long, I'm now sorry I didn't act sooner. Yes, it is pricey, especially when you add $400 for a similar quality ball head to the equation, and you end up with well over $1000 for the whole kit. As I have used this now in conjunction with the Acratech GP ballhead I can tell you that it is extremely well built and works wonderfully. I can open and close it in less than a quarter turn from open to fully closed. It's hard to fault the finish on the carbon fiber legs, and the magnesium parts are of a high quality as well. The tubes seem to be rock-steady in every way. Even the tiniest bottom tubes seem as though they are not going to flex at all. With this tripod, you can adjust the ground level from anywhere in the world! If you are shooting very low to the ground, this tool makes it easy to remove the center column in under 30 seconds. As easy and quick as removing the column, reattaching it is also straightforward. There are O rings inside all of the leg clamps to prevent dust and grit from entering. There are purists out there who don't like center column tripods because they can't be extended far enough, but this column's carbon fiber design and the fine precision of its column clamp mean it is surprisingly stable when extended far enough. The center column can't even be extended by my eye with the center column all the way raised since I'm 6 foot tall and I can't reach the viewfinder. Moreover, all of this goodness is packed into a lightweight bag for easy transport. I weighed my combo of this tripod and the Acratech GP ballhead at 2116 grams, about 4 ounces. There are 66 pounds in this weight range. The investment starts to look more appealing when you consider a camera body with a relatively short usable lifespan can easily cost $2000 and up. Contrast that with the decades of use you can get from this product. In light of the fact that a top quality camera shooting through the best glass can have its shots ruined by the movement of a cheap tripod, the wisdom of securing a stable base becomes obvious.

With such a lightweight tripod, I would not hesitate to carry it around. Currently I am using this in conjunction with my Acratech GP-84 A total weight of about four pounds is associated with the S ballhead. As I will be carrying this on the back of my Lowepro Flipside 400 backpack to Maui, I will be taking along this travel set. As a result of its light weight, the tripod is easy to move. It is easy to extend and retract the legs this way. Nevertheless, there are a few issues to consider When unlocking and locking a section of a leg, make sure you only slightly turn the rings that are used to control it. In the event of too much loosening, a plastic piece that is located at the bottom of the leg may fall out. As soon as it has come out, this piece can be very difficult to replace. The low weight and easy handling of this tripod make it a tripod you will actually take on your trips, not just purchase to use for a few seconds in the store. In my readings, I have read about people who keep buying tripods because the ones they purchased were too heavy or inadequate in some way. I had one of these tripods when I was a teenager and it ended up in the trash. Although I recommend this tripod, you will need an appropriate head of similar quality like the Acratech ballhead as well.
