It fulfills a need you may not have realized you had. If you are not using longer lenses, it really isn't a necessity since the current Z lens is so small. It takes unscrewing the Z lenses from the adapter before you can put them back in place once the adapter is in place. The good news is that the longer Nikkor lenses put a little more weight on the body or are more difficult to swap out.
The adapter fits perfectly to my FTZ adapter and is used as an extra mounting point for my camera rail.
