I'm not a techie, but after about 4 years of use, my Nuvi 1490 behaved in the same way. It appears that the battery isn't capable of holding a charge. Last July, I replaced the battery with a NewPower battery, which resolved my issue. A small tool to open the case is included in the NewPower 99 battery kit. In just over ten minutes, I was able to replace the battery. You can also look for a video on YouTube that provides step-by-step instructions. step-by-step instructions on how to replace the battery Best wishes for the project's success, Dave.
I've had the battery for at least two years, and I've done numerous updates during that time with no problems.
Yes. Both are the same unit, with the exception that one has lifetime maps that have nothing to do with the model itself.
When it is charged by external power, it will take care of the "low battery." The "external power supply not connected" error is new to me, but it makes sense if your internal battery is discharged but not likely able to hold a charge. The replacement is a simple process that comes with a CD and clear instructions. To keep track of the small parts, you'll need good eyes, good lighting, and a small dish. The tool is included in the set. Your 1490 will be restored to its original condition.

The installation video for the battery is VERY misleading. To make it appear easier, they must have used a Garmin that had been dismantled and reassembled. The outer cover is difficult to remove, but it can be done with patience and perseverance. To remove the torx head screws, I had to grind the small torx head tool down to size. Otherwise, because the screw head is too small, it simply spun inside it. They also make it appear as if removing the battery is simple. It's not because the battery is stuck to the back of the GPS with super-sticky tape. I finally got it out with the help of a small screwdriver. Because the battery was bending as I pried it out, I was concerned that I would break it. Believe me when I say that I'm a retired mechanical engineer who can fix almost anything. I completed the repair, but it is not as straightforward as the video suggests.
When I re-installed the screwdriver, I discovered that it did nothing but strip the screw heads, as reported in previous reviews. putting the unit together When I plugged a USB into the unit to charge it (there was no power in the battery), it turned on for a brief moment before turning off. I couldn't get the unit to turn on via battery after an hour, so I decided to open the case again to make sure the connection was secure, but getting the case off again was extremely difficult due to the screwdriver mentioned above. When I finally got it, I tried to make sure the cable was secure in the "socket," but as mentioned in another review, trying to do so caused the connector to come off the motherboard, leaving me with a useless GPS that I threw away. The battery will be returned to me. I had to give it a star, and while it isn't easy to connect, the video and tool were the factors in my decision.
I bought my Nuvi 1490 a long time ago. I only use it once a year, when my family and I go to Florida for a long vacation. For shorter trips, I rely on my iPhone. I watched a few YouTube videos on how to open the battery and replace it. Before ordering the battery, I disassembled my Nuvi to ensure that I could open it. The battery arrived on time, and the original battery's back has a strong adhesive to keep it in place. This is not the case with the new battery. I was worried at first, but everything came back together and worked perfectly after that. That happened in February of this year. It's been a while since I've used it. My only suggestion is that the manufacturer include an adhesive tape that can be applied to the back of the battery to help it stay in place. I did notice that the battery was moving around a little after I put it back together. That is why I gave it four instead of five stars. Hopefully, this will not have an impact on its longevity or functionality.
This turned out to be a lot easier than I expected. Since other reviews have praised how well it functions, here are a few tips that may make disassembling and reassembling the GPS a little easier. 1. br>br> With the first step, take it slowly and carefully. I cracked the frame trying to remove it, but it's hard to tell because it fits so snugly back together. Instead of randomly prying the thin frame with the prying tool, try to locate the points where the frame is actually snapped into the body and focus on unsnapping these points. Finding these spots may take some time, but the effort will be worthwhile. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br Instead of wiggling the top part of the tool on the frame, don't be afraid to press it in deeper to pry. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. When pulling the circuit board, take it slowly so you don't tear or rip the thin power strip that connects the screen to the circuit board. br>br>4. The battery wires on my unit were oriented differently; they were on the short end of the garmin battery but ran along the long end of the replacement battery. It should work just as well; just take it slow and move the wires around to avoid pinching them when installing the new battery. 5. br>br> Double-sided tape was used to secure the Garmin battery to the body of the GPS in my case. I was able to carefully peel off the double-sided tape and reuse it on the new one. 6. br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br> Keep the tools; if you need to do it again, all you have to do is buy a battery! Others, I assume, are claiming that the same tools can be used to replace batteries in a variety of different items. My battery appeared to be fully charged when I received it. br>br> I'll still charge it for two hours before using it, as per the instructions.
The GPS's maker made it difficult for users to replace the battery! Because the screws are so small, they can't be found once they've been dropped from a work desk! The NewPower99, on the other hand, is a battery-powered device. With special care, the replacement kit makes quick work of the job. The screwdriver comes with a magnetic tip that helps hold the tiny screws in place for re-installation. introduction into the screw holes that already exist The NewPower99 battery, kit, and video instructions have all exceeded my expectations.
I was unable to remove the plate because the tool provided to remove the screws from my Nuvi 1490 was incorrectly sized. I had to take the Garmin to a local computer repair shop, where they installed the battery using the proper tool. This added $35 to the cost of the NewPower99, plus tax. My money-saving plan, as well as my DIY plan, were both doomed. a plan to save Buyer beware, and double-check that you're getting the right tool for YOUR device.
The installation, setup, and charging went off without a hitch. Now that I'm trying to use the new battery for a trip, Garmin keeps shutting down with a low battery warning, so I guess it doesn't hold a charge for very long. I'm unable to return it because it's been over a month since I installed Bettery, which initially charged but no longer does so. It was a waste of money.
