It depends on the units you have; I know that connecting two MFDs requires an internet cable. Only a Nema 2000 drop cable is included with this cable.

Is it possible to connect a Garmin gps to a Garmin vhf and send nmea data to the radio using this method?

A device (radio, vhf, mfd, etc.) is connected to this cable. A NEMA 2000 Back Bone connects a device to the NEMA 2000 network. This cable isn't designed to connect two devices together directly. The NEMA 2000 Back Bone must be used to connect all devices. I hope this has been of assistance.
