Questions & Answers

If you leave the car running overnight, will the battery be depleted?

No, it is assumed that your vehicle's battery is in good working order. It works by detecting movement and turning on when an intrusion is detected. br>However, if I were going on a two-week vacation, I would turn it off just in case, as some newer cars have a number of systems that weigh for your return, etc.br>Hope this helpsbr>Have a happy and safe Christmas and a fantastic 2018!

When the car is turned off, how long will this cable keep the Garmin dashcam on and recording?

It's set to inpark mode all of the time. When someone or something comes too close to it or if it is bumped, it begins to record. It only consumes a small amount of electricity. You must upgrade to a 32-bit or higher recording card.

Parking mode is what I need. As I get in and out of my car, I probably spend 15 to 30 minutes each time. Is the battery going to be depleted as a result?

Good afternoonbr>There is a special cable that you will need to obtain from GARMIN and install that will provide power from the car when the ignition is turned off. The onboard GARMIN battery will not support park mode. However, if you have the Parking mode cable installed and your car battery is in good working order, you should have no problems with your car battery discharging. br>I hope this information is useful. br>Be well and stay safe.

The length of the cable was given as 6 feet in response to the question, "How long is the cable?" Is this entirely correct? Most cars, including mine, don't have that much space for a hidden installation! ?

It appears that the distance between the USB and the fuse box is approximately 10 feet, and the distance between the fuse box and the end of the pigtail is approximately 3 feet. It's long enough to fit in my full-size truck and be hidden.

This cable is no longer needed due to bad software
3/5

A cable that does exactly what it says it does. Only for Garmin's software to let them down. br>You see, the "parking mode videos" are stored in their own folder on the SD card and are not deleted during the deletion process. So, what exactly does this imply, you might wonder? When your SD card becomes full, your dash cam is supposed to push the oldest video to the end to make room for the new. Rinse and repeat until you've exhausted all of your options. This is standard fare. br>However, Garmin's software DOES NOT DELETE THE PARKING VIDEOS, ONLY THE DRIVING VIDEOS. This means that your SD card becomes so clogged with parked videos that it bullies the "driving videos" to the point where there are only 3 minutes of "driving videos" available at any given time; the only way to avoid this is to manually delete the videos every few days. Who's going to take care of it? According to Garmin Support, this is the only way to get around it. Pffft. br>br>For Garmin, this is such an easy fix. It could be made available to all devices via a firmware update - However, this issue has been present for many years. In order to fix the problem, I had to turn off the parking mode - As a result, buying this cable in the first place was a waste of money. Bottom line: it's a waste of money. br>br> Given that it's all made by the same company, it's even more perplexing. (Garmin DASH CAM 45) br>br>(Used with GARMIN DASH CAM 45).

It is functional
3/5

BUT. As I write this, I've had the dash cam for about a week. While this camera has a lot of cool features, there are a few things that Garmin should look into and improve to allow for more consumer fine tuning in the field. br>br>First issue - Lane Departure Alert: I had to disable this feature because Garmin's current algorithm needs to be updated. It kept indicating a lane departure on a two-lane road even though there was none. The alerts resulted in a situation where the driver was distracted. Garmin customer service was unable to assist with this issue. As a result, I doubt there are any changes made by the end user. br>br>Issue No. 2 - There are no end-user adjustments to speak of here, so be cautious. As one might expect, people drive in a variety of ways. What one person considers "too close for comfort," another might find quite pleasant, albeit not at a safe distance. Even if it was done at a safe distance, when another vehicle decides to change lanes and ends up in front of you, it warns you of a collision. As a result, determining what constitutes a safe distance is a matter of opinion. I can see how this could lead to a legal battle. br>br>3rd Issue - Videos That Have Been Parked – Holy Cow! This is insane, because this mode, according to Garmin, records while you are away from your vehicle. In the event of an impact, the camera's vibration sensor is set to initiate the recording process (after the time out timer has expired). When you park in a busy parking lot, the camera starts recording at different lengths until the timer runs out. In my case, the timer was set to two hours, and I had 53 parked video recordings in that time. None of them have anything to do with a possible vehicle collision while parked. When I contacted Garmin to inform them of the problem and ask how to adjust the sensitivity, I received an unexpected response. "There's no way to change the sensitivity," they said. Reduce the timeout timer as much as possible. or find a different parking spot. " It's a bit of a cavalier reaction. It defeats the purpose of the unattended monitoring function to activate it after the impact has occurred, so if it occurs after your time out period has expired, you may be out of luck in proving your case. Plan on spending some time sorting through potentially hundreds of videos to find your impact video if you extend the timeout timer. br>br>As a result, while the camera works and has a decent resolution, I believe there is still room for improvement. If you can ignore the problems I mentioned earlier, it's a good system.

Parking mode isn't the only use for it
4/5

I recently purchased two Garmin 55 navigation systems as well as two parking mode wiring harnesses. The camera is fantastic in terms of size and functionality. Even if the cord is long enough to be hidden in the headliner and molding, I didn't want it to come down and plug into the cigarette lighter. If you're going to the trouble, make it seamless by hardwiring it to your fuse box under your steering wheel. There are some good videos on YouTube, and it was easier than I expected for a first-time installer. The two items you'll need to purchase from an auto parts store (approximately $8 each if they have the extra fuses and $6 if they don't) are two add-a-fuses. adapters for fuses As one car had low profile fuses and the other did not, make sure you get the right size and a fuse adapter. Because the harness's wire end is bare wire, you must crimp it into the adapter before plugging it into the fuse panel. Each adapter has two slots (use a 10A for both the battery and the accessory wire), allowing for two fuses to accommodate the dash cam and whatever else was being powered at the time. An adapter is not required for the third wire, which is ground. br>br>Once it's up and running, it's completely automatic, and you won't have to do anything else. There is a legal notice that appears every time with a prompt to "agree," but you don't need to press any buttons because it will go away in about 10 seconds. There are 15 seconds remaining. In fact, you should probably avoid touching this small camera at all times because it is very easy to accidentally change the aim point. br>br>In regards to the parking mode. It's motion activated, and I disabled it after returning to my car and discovering 17 parked mode videos. The activation appears to be triggered by light and distant movement. Nonetheless, the parking mode wiring was exactly what I needed to keep the console uncluttered and to avoid noticing the camera, which is barely visible beneath my rear view mirror.

It does exactly what it says on the tin
5/5

However, it should have come with the DashCam from the start. When properly wired, it performs exactly as it should. It is quite expensive, but at the end of the day, all you want is for it to work properly, which it does. However, I still believe that this should have been included in the dash cam package.
