Is it possible to use a filter with this? Is vignetting a result of it?

It can be used with a filter if the filter is mounted to the lens and the hood is screwed into the filter's threads. There is no threading on the hood's front. I've only used it with the 35mm f2D and it hasn't resulted in any vignetting.

I was able to save the lens

I landed on this after dropping a camera. The camera's lens and body were in good shape - This had a scratch on it. Construction is entirely made of metal. I went out and purchased another. It's a lot less expensive than getting a new D800 and 35mm f/2 lens.
