Questions & Answers

How much of the lens is affected by this filter? I tried a ProMaster that only affected 1/4-inch of the lens. a third of the focal length ?

It's 50% on the one I own at the moment. I'd also like to point out that the quality is outstanding; they are, by a long shot, the best filters I've ever used.

What's the difference between the HT ($104) and the regular ($43) versions?

The multicoating is referred to as HT, which stands for High Trans, which stands for High Transmission. This new multicoating, like some other new multicoatings that repel dirt and fingerprints, is said to be magical. br>More importantly than transmission, multicoating reduces reflections, which eliminates issues that plagued uncoated grads in the past. When shooting with a grad, you're almost by definition shooting into a bright source of light, and you don't want any reflections in your shadows. I've had uncoated grads show reflections off the filter from behind the camera when used in those rectangular Cokin mounts! That is not something you should do. Ken Rockwell is quoted as saying

Is this a slim filter? What are the advantages of using a wide-angle lens?

Slim is a fantastic lens, but I haven't tried it with a wide angle lens yet.

There are better filters out there
3/5

After a few days of use, I decided to return this filter for two reasons. To begin with, the coatings on it are nowhere near as nice as the B W version of this filter, which I have since ordered in its place. It's difficult to quickly wipe the lens clean when shooting in wet conditions like waterfall spray or sea spray from the ocean. With a single swipe of a microfiber rag, the B W MRC coated filter becomes clear. In addition, I noticed that the filter left horizontal lines in the image's shadow areas, which were very visible after even slightly boosting the shadows in post-production. The case isn't great either, as it left a residue on the filter that I had to clean every time I removed it from the case. The B W hard shell cases are far superior. This filter is probably great for some people, but it's not for me and my style of photography. The return service was fantastic! The refund was processed in a very short period of time.

Filter is fantastic
4/5

With premium glass, this is a very high-quality graduated neutral density filter. I am a professional photographer who has owned dozens of filters over the years, but I have discarded all but the Grad ND and a polarizer since the advent of digital cameras and photoshop. For any subject where the sky is significantly brighter than the rest of the scene, the grad filter is invaluable. Every pro should have one of these to control exposure across the scene, and I use it all the time for family portraiture. Having said that, there are two issues that I have with it: To begin with, there are no points on the edges to indicate the gradient's center, and it's difficult to tell where the gradient begins and ends once it's screwed onto the camera lens. As a result, I've drawn a line through the middle. For quick reference in the field, use a dab of white-out to line the edges. Second, the gradient appears to end abruptly in the middle of the gradient. a way around the filter It should be a gradual transition from dark to light, with no sharp lines in the middle. Though this is useful in some cases, I prefer a "true" gradient with a smoother "fall-off. " transition" or "off".

It's fine, but the price is prohibitively high for its intended use
4/5

First and foremost, the filter does its job well: It aids in the prevention of excessive light on one half of the side (top or bottom, or rotate the front ring to your preference). When you're trying to take a photo with a bright sky on the upper half of the frame, this will come in handy. That's the only thing it's used for. Only a few drawbacks can be found. At a wide angle, there is some vigination ( When I use it with an 18-35mm lens, I have to zoom it in beyond 28mm. A second neutral filter is attached to a 200mm Nikor lens. Unless you're photographing a sunset or sunrise, it's not a good idea to use 0. in the middle of the day. The 6th grade is dark enough to keep the sky from shining too brightly. You don't want to have too many of this costly item simply because you require more darker (stop down) glass. The quality is good, but it's only worth the money if you take a lot of photos at sunrise and sunset, or if you occasionally take photos with long exposures.

I believe it is just me, as there is nothing wrong with the product
3/5

I believe it's all in my head; there's nothing wrong with the product; I should've chosen 1 instead of 0. 6 because I find it difficult to use; it accentuates too much in a dark setting, and I don't notice enough of an effect during the day.

Tiffen HT Grad ND Tiffen HT Grad ND Tiffen HT Grad ND Tiffen It's a very nice filter, with excellent fit and finish
5/5

In addition to the more common hard plastic cases, it comes with a (pretty nice) velcro soft pouch. The product image on Amazon is slightly misleading, as the transition from ND to clear is not as smooth as it appears in the image. The filter is shown in a more accurate manner on the Tiffen website. Even so, the graduated ND effect isn't overly noticeable.

If you take a lot of photos, this is a must-have filter
5/5

If you photograph landscapes often, this is a must-have filter. This filter darkens the sky, resulting in more evenly exposed photos. I'll be stacking this filter with a Hoya HD3 polarizer in the near future:.

Don't Put Your Trust In The Image
3/5

This got a one out of five from me. The image is misleading, implying that there is a wide band of gradient transition spanning two-thirds or more of the glass. Only the top half of this filter's GND is concentrated. (Tiffen also offers a 'blend' GND that covers the majority of the glass and resembles the image for this filter. ) ) This filter may be problematic in landscapes with tall features (trees, mountains, and buildings) that extend above the horizon. Tiffen makes excellent glass, so reading the specifications on their website before relying on images on other sellers' websites is a good idea.
