What is the mechanism behind it? Is it just one hand holding it in front of the lens?

You can hold it in front of the lense by hand if you want, but it was made to fit into their filter holder. That way, you can place it precisely where you want for the graduated effect while not interfering with the exposure of the camera.

UWA's kit has gotten a lot better

It's perfect for my WonderPana FreeArc. I like how you can rotate the grad on axis as well as change the vertical variation for different compositions. This is a thick filter with a nice thickness to it. When combined with the 10 stop ND, it's great for cutting back the sky. With 14-inch screens, there are no color cast problems. On the D800, I was able to get a total of 24 shots.
