A standard black plastic is used. It is not a matter of color or gloss. Some pieces may be glossier than others, but it is neither. Although they are overall not glossy, I would say that they are not smooth.
There is a slight difference in length between the 3414 and a 3414 The best thing to do is to check the dimensions of your outlets.

It is not a bad item, however the description provided by the seller is not accurate. This is my second review of this item, and there are some good tips in this one! This is not a bad item, it is on the weak side however, what else can you do with something so tiny? If it is made of another material, it may be more durable as well as more economical to buy and sell. The seller could have done much better with the product description. For example, instead of saying ALL KEYSTONES WORK WITH THIS ITEM, an outright lie, they should have said, Selected Keystones Work With This Item, The listing may include products made by OnQ/Legrand, Disney, Communist China, or other manufacturers. I have a PART NUMBER for a WHITE CAT6 Keystone, which will work in this on or through Legrand cable. I have a question for On or Legrand wall outlet insert, part number WP3476- In order to order or search for multiple quantities, simply add 10, 50, or 100 to the 'WH', without My opinion now is that all is well, but I did spend HOURS researching a solution that the seller should have included in the description instead of leaving me to figure it out by myself. The Leviton product that seems similar to this (Legrand WP3416WH 6 Port Decorator Outlet insert) is what I originally ordered. There are 6 ports leaving the walls thin, but they do not stand up to shock, so snap the keystone jack in gently.
There are keystone jacks on this plate you need to be aware of. This is a narrow space with no room for extra width. It is impossible to place two jacks side by side if the size of your keystone exceeds that of the opening on the plate even by a fraction of an inch.
These are the supplies I purchased to finish my data project. The hardwires were perfect for my office because I wanted as many devices connected to the internet and to the data network as possible. The cost at the time was high, but it was worth it.
